  • An entertaining read.

With lots of references to some of the great classics it was fun reading a little sci-fi for a change. I’m not sure I’ll read her other works but this one was good. Along with a lot of literary references her historical references were well done as well. If you haven’t read “Three men in a Boat” by Jerome K. Jerome do so first. It’s a great read and this book references it a lot.

  • Annoying Writing

Thought I would enjoy this. It got good reviews but the story was lame. The author has an irritating writing style. Skipped some of the beginning and seemed like it was going to get good. That lasted only a short while. Finally couldn’t take it any more. Will donate to the library.

  • Time Travel and the Bishop's Bird Stmp -- To Say Nothing of the Dog

Humor is difficult to write effectively, but Connie Willis skillfully blends time travel, mystery, and romance -- to say nothing of major doses of humor -- in a story that ranges from the late 21st century, World War II, and the Victorian Era. And it all involves the secret of the missing bishop's bird stump. What in the world is a bird stump? Good question: you'll just need to read the novel to find out -- plus how a time-lagged time traveler falls in love with a female colleague as beautiful as a Waterhouse nymph. As a writer, myself, I am in awe of Ms. Willis's brilliance.
