Good movie even though it's dated.
This is an old Ryan O'Neill movie which he says he was sorry to have made, but his very good performance does not reflect that statement he made during an interview years ago.. The dialogue in the movie is minimal, which works very well. And a movie with no names for the characters is another welcome change of pace.

If you think Ryan O’Neal’s best film would be “Love Story” well then you’re dead wrong. With Walter Hill’s second outing as director, Ryan has chosen the opportunity to show off his acting muscles as well as his impeccable driving skills. Undoubtedly, he gives the finest not to mention the most underrated performance of his career as an unnamed getaway driver known only throughout the film as “The Cowboy.” Recognized for a succession of high-stakes robbery jobs, he’s ruthlessly tracked by a hard-nosed cop (a superb Bruce Dern) who is determined to bring him down. So he orchestrates an intricate plan to nail the indefinable professional: creating a bank job where “The Cowboy” is the driver. If the filmmakers ever attempted to do the exact same stunts with computer graphics, then the outcome would’ve achieved the opposite. “The Driver” is a no-holds-barred, unpredictable, non-expositional classic of the crime genre. So sit back and enjoy the ride, Cowboy.

Great car action movie
I have a collection of a LOT of Car Action movies (from the classics like Bullit, Two Lane Blacktop, Vanishing Point, etcetera) to a lot of lesser known titles. I had never heard of this movie before it was recommended in an issue of Octane Magazine. The plot is basic "cop movie", but it has a lot of vehicle action. It does not have a lot of character development, and the cars are not the stars,but is almost like a '70s version of "the Transporter" where the car action is in the background.
