Vivid history retold like a legendary tale of adventure
The Shield and the Sword is an excellent book for any person interested in the crusades, sieges, hereoic escapades of daring knights, adventure, blood, treasure, and glory. The book is a history of the Knights of St, John, but it is so well crafted for a history book that one cannot help but feel like he is rather reading something of an infinitely more interesting genre. Discussing the Order's rise with the first Crusade through modern times (book was published in 1970's, so it takes one only into that decade), with a heavy emphasis on the siege of Malta, the author aptly makes the story of the "boys of St. Johnny" come alive. The book is thorough on history; however, if one wants an extremely detailed account of the order, with much more detailed explanations of thigns such as the ... The Shield and the Sword is an excellent book for any person interested in the crusades, sieges, hereoic escapades of daring knights, adventure, blood, treasure, and glory. The book is a history of the Knights of St, John, but it is so well crafted for a history book that one cannot help but feel like he is rather reading something of an infinitely more interesting genre. It's a great read no matter what, the kind of book that makes a kid dream of being a knight and makes an adult marvel at the amazing deeds which these men committed. If you're doing research on the crusades in general and the Hospitallers in specific, then this is an excellent book for you. Or anyone, for that matter. Basically, if Chuck Noris was a history book, there would be no contenders, because he would be The Shield and the Sword.
