About this product

Product Information

"Start with Douglas Adams's comic science fiction ( A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ) and J.R.R. Tolkien's alternative worlds, mix in James Ellroy's gritty realism and Jonathan Swift's unflinching satire and, if you're lucky, you'll get something like Terry Pratchett's Thud !" -- Wall Street Journal City Watch Commander Sam Vimes must solve the murder of a prominent dwarf or watch as Discworld is plunged into a bloody civil war in Terry Pratchett's delightful Discworld satire, a brilliant tale of prejudice, ancient feuds, and tender fatherhood. Long, long ago, in a gods-forsaken hellhole called Koom Valley, trolls and dwarfs met in bloody combat. Centuries later, each side still views the other with simmering animosity that has been heightened of late because of one Grag Hamcrusher. The influential dwarf has been fomenting unrest among a section of Ankh-Morpork's citizenry--a volatile situation made far worse when the petite provocateur is discovered bashed to death . . . with a troll club lying conveniently nearby. If he doesn't solve the murder of just one dwarf, Commander Sam Vimes of Ankh-Morpork City Watch is going to see it fought again, right outside his office. But more than one corpse is waiting for Vimes in the eerie, summoning darkness of a labyrinthine mine network being secretly excavated beneath Ankh-Morpork's streets. With war-drums beating ever louder, Vimes must unravel every clue, outwit every assassin, and brave any darkness to find the solution. And the darkness is following him, pulling him deep into the muck and mire of superstition, hatred, and fear--and perhaps all the way to Koom Valley itself. Until six o'clock every day, when without fail, the Commander goes home to read Where's My Cow?, with accompanying farmyard noises, to his little boy. Because there are some things you must do. The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Thud! is the 7th book in the City Watch collection and the 34th Discworld book. The City Watch collection in order: Guards! Guards! Men at Arms Feet of Clay Jingo The Fifth Elephant Night Watch Thud! Snuff

Reviews
As always, Pratchett's latest Discworld yarn is funny, fast-paced, the kind of satire that explores serious issues while making readers love it., "Pratchett's imagination and satirical wit are on full display." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Imgenious, brilliant and hilarious." -- Washington Post "A delight from beginning to end." -- Fantasy & Science Fiction "One of the darker Discworld tales, Thud! does not disappoint." -- Sunday Express (London) "Pratchett, ever inventive, offers up his usual fun and games with typography and footnotes, a full complement of parody, word-play and swift allusion. . . . But Thud! moves from a comedy of multi-culti Ankh-Morpork manners into a pungent exploration of prejudice and dread, hypocrisy and rage. For all its magic carriage rides, technomancy and gloriously absurd transfigurations, on Discworld, the death of innocents (and innocence) is never cause for laughter." -- New York Newsday "As always, Pratchett's latest Discworld yarn is funny, fast-paced, the kind of satire that explores serious issues while making readers love it." -- Booklist "Funny, poignant, complicated and character-driven." -- Locus "The usual quick-moving, amusing and entertaining Pratchett tale. Pratchett has never shied away from using his settings and characters to offer commentary on the world, and [THUD!] is no different . . . . [Pratchett]'s his usual brilliant self here -- sarcastic, ironic, and just laugh-out-loud funny." -- Associated Press

  • Thud! A Novel of the Discworld

Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" is fantasy literature dragged "kicking and screaming into the century of the fruitbat," with a large dose of irony thrown in for seasoning. This novel features Commander Sam Vimes (head of Ankh Morpork's City Watch), one of my favorite Pratchett characters, and further fleshes out the history and topography of the Discworld. It's funny, but funny with a message. Like "Jingo" and "The Fifth Element," "Thud!" is a great commentary on human behavior and foibles, ridculing prejudice wherever it occurs, and teaching lessons on tolerance, loyalty, and commitment, but, as usual, with a large dose of cynicism, and even a children's story ("Where's My Cow?"). The story is well paced. The characters, as usual, are well drawn, and the humor mixed in with drama and a ...

  • Years of Pratchett!

My all time knock down tied up favourite writer. This man can make the mundane seem magickal and the magickal seem downright achievable! I haven't read a book by him that I could actually put down until I had read it cover to cover...and some of them are way too heavy to hold that long....I even went to see the play Guards! Guards! many, many years ago in England, and I laughed my socks off! Mr Pratchett is indeed responsible for the increase in sock sales in whichever locale I reside. Maybe I should send him the bill? Anyone with a brain and sense of humour, or who is in the market for such, should buy, read and reread until you get all of the subtleties captured in print from this author. The physics of the universe and the magic of the spheres depends upon it.

  • Sam Vimes Saves the City & the Day all 2 Where's my cow

Got to love Mr. Pratchett, a bit of fun, adventure, true love and now he adds children's books throw in vampires, werewolves, dwarfs trolls, oh and a dragon or two... all mixed up with cops and robbers & you have Ankh Moorpork. Bought this book for my darling daughter, but couldn't resist reading it first & I am so glad I did! Now she and I have another T P to talk about. Laughed, felt good, and immediately wanted to go back and read about the wonderful world Mr. Pratchett creates.. Enjoy, I know I did!

  • Laugh Out Loud Funny--Don't Miss It!!

Terry Pratchett is one of the most gifted writiers of our time--but unlike some authors, you actually enjoy his books!! This one parodies the Da Vinci code by requiring assorted dwarves, werewolves, and vampires to solve a murder by studing a painting of The Battle of Koom Valley. He also manages to mock role playing games, Lord of The Rings, and a dozen other popular references. If you don't catch the intended references, the characters and story are interesting enough to keep reading. Read this one!!

  • Best Fantasy Book

This book is one of the most all around enjoyable books I have ever read! It's witty, humorous, action packed; along with the ups and downs of characters caught in a world where nothing is what it seems. A world of vampires, werewolves, dwarves, humans and trolls co-exist, or try to at least, but with the dwarves and trolls at each others throats, it's hard for the Watch to see what's really going on. What know one really wants to address, but is lurking ever closer..... A thrill to read of the utmost kind.
