About this product

Product Information

Carefully packaged and groomed for success, The Runaways built an image for themselves out of their consciously trashy costumes, frank lyrics, and straightforward, hard-rocking sound. Closely managed by the industry-savvy Kim Fowley, they were also accused of being a gimmick, and the fact that a few of them were still learning how to play their instruments didn't do much to dissuade this notion. The fact remains, however, that the controversy surrounding them in the late 1970s had as much to do with American culture's expectations and morality, and the buttons they pushed were important ones. Their confrontational sexuality and unabashed attitude paved the way for future generations of female musicians, and Runaway Joan Jett has been an inspiration to the countless riot grrls who followed in her wake. This documentary by Victory Tischler-Blue--also a bass player for the band--traces The Runaway's path into the limelight and their consequent descent into drug abuse and conflicts with their management. The originators of "jailbait rock" are presented in a multifaceted, insightful portrait, highlighting the difficulties encountered by an all-girl group during that era, and offering an inspiration to future generations.

  • My thoughts on Edgeplay.

Like all reviews this one will be very subjective. I bought this because I wanted to see the Runaways performing and because I used to be a big Joan Jett fan. Unfortunately this film has little of either. This documentary was made by one of the former band members (Vickie Blue) who interviewed all the other band members (except Joan Jett) some of their family members and management. The interviews were interesting and we learn some juicy back stage goings on, but it all seemed a bit amaturish. The video quality is excellent but some of the editing and camera work seems like a student film. As I said there is very little performance footage and no Joan Jett. If you are a big Runaways fan it is probably worth your time, otherwise, probably not.

  • Awesome

This film is full of so much emotions that cannot be reviewed here. Have a look at yourself - it's worth it. This is a thrilling, moving and touching documentary - not only for Runaways fans. Please let me take this chance to place a request here: Sandy West, who used to be the Runaways drummer and who provided a lot of input on this film, was diagnosed with lung cancer and a brain tumor. She has battled bravely and endured an extensive course of chemotherapy which is still continuing. Even though she has some medical insurance, her bills are piling up alarmingly, and any amount you'd like to donate, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated. If you'd like to help (paypal donations, letters), please go to her homepage at http://www.rocketcityrecords.com/sandywest THANK YOU SO ...

  • Edgeplay-a fim about the Runaways 2005 DVD

As a documentary good enough and honest but I miss some live action.I am also looking for Joan Jett live at the rocpalast, essen Germany from the beginning of the 80`s so I will recomend that one.I have benn a fan of the Runaways from early eighties.I think maybe the recordcompany can be one of the reasons that they have to leave out much of the livematerial from the DVD.It`s a question of money and rights I think.Mabe a picture of the group at the cover should have been there as well.per Olav Moltu,Norway.

  • the great rock n' roll swindle ( female version )

In a nutshell, my opignon's really simple : if you liked The Runaways, dont buy it, you'll be disapointed. If you didnt really love their stuff, but think about listening this documentary as some kind of musical anthology, go really far away from it too, there's nothing here. Only a bunch of now growing up womens, who complain over and over, the same way they probably did it 15 years ago. One of their album was called Little Lost Girls : yeah, forever, in that case.
