Babylon 5 - Series 1 (DVD 2002)
About 14 years ago, while I had the pleasure of spoonfeeding my son in his highchair I stumbled upon Babylon 5 on the kitchen portable TV. Feeding was a time consuming, highly repetative task, but one night of the week I could look forward to watching Babylon 5 on the portable Black and white set while pouring food indirectly over the floor. The picture quality was alway lousy, and even worse on Channel 4! which I recall (?) was the channel showing it. Anyway, it was always interesting to see what would happen next and how the sci-fi stories all gelled together. I always thought it was good even watching with one eye on a dodgy screen and food everywhere! Now my son has just recently turned 16 and during the Summer hols we usually spend more time together than usual. We just spent the ... We just spent the large part of last year (or more) watching the complete X-Files together . So this box set was bought for that valuable father and son time in front of the TV. Goodness knows there are little quality new Sci-fi/fantasy programs arround at the moment (with a few exceptions of course). Well... It was better than I recalled. I never really experienced the special effects on my black and white, but I needn't have worried. They are a credit to the makers and still stand up well to the test of time. The stories themselves are clever and thought provoking, leading the viewer on a journey through a larger story arc of saga proportions. I love the characters as well. They're all so human! Even the heavily made-up alien races seem to have all the good, bad, and plain stupid characteristics of our own race. It's interesting to note that although I do enjoy Star Trek in all it's incarnations, I didn't consider purchasing any of them before this. With all that Star Trek has done, all the places it's been and all the time it's shown on the TV (which frankly is practically everynight somewhere on satilite TV) both my son and I think it's just another Star Trek episode. There is little anticipation of what happen's next. There's no prolonged suspense. So we bought Babylon 5 on the premise that he'd never seen any of it, and it'd been such a long time since I saw most of it it would be fresh and exciting. It has certainly ticked those boxes and now we're coming to the end of season 2! Shame the Sixth Form started back to school this week. I'll have to wait much longer between episodes now! I'd recommend this to anyone. Especially any of those Star Trek die hards out there that avioded it like the plague when it was first shown on TV.

Best Sci-Fi ever
I remember watching this series when it first came out on Channel 4 and just loved it. There were plenty of sci-fi films and series around - of course Star Trek being the most famous. But it's effects were brilliant and the story line started off quietly with each episode a story in itself. But watched carefully there were hints of the bigger picture as the story evolved. It is a series that can be watched as individual episodes but watched all through and the story as it unravels is unmissable. Much better than most sci-fi series. Personally I prefer this to any of the Star Trek franchise. Some may say it came up on the back of Star Wars but they were big budget gung-ho films where as this was a steady workhorse sort of programme.
