Sylvester Stallone stars as famed mobster Angelo "Snaps" Provolone, who promises his dying father (Kirk Douglas) that he will hang up his tommy gun and lead a kinder, gentler life. However, on the day Snaps is to start his legitimate career in banking, he gets derailed by a spate of family emergencies. It all begins when Snaps's accountant suddenly declares his intention to wed the ex-gangster's daughter (Marisa Tomei)--but he's not the only prospective husband banging at Snaps's door. Then, just to complicate matters, his daughter announces she's pregnant. Later, a young stranger arrives, claiming to be Snaps's daughter--which is news to him. And that's just the beginning of the confusion in this madcap farce from esteemed comedy director John Landis.

Screwball, Mob, Situation Comedy
This is a screwball, mob comedy with complications on complications. It is funny from start to finish and Sylvester Stallone is a good funnyman who keeps the ball rolling. Has a good cast of comic characters for support. The whole production is excellent. Who knew mobsters could be this funny.

As film star Frankie Fane (Boyd) is about to hear if he won a best acting Oscar, his friend Hymie Kelly (Bennett) reminisces about Fane's struggle to the top, beginning as a spieler for his stripper girlfriend Laurel (St. John). After moving to New York, Frankie dumps Laurel for a budding fashion designer, Kay Bergdahl (Sommer), which sets up a chance meeting with talent scout Sophie Cantaro (Parker). Sophie arranges for him to be signed with agent "Kappy" Kapstetter (Berle) and brings Frankie to Hollywood, where he quickly becomes a rising star. At each turn, however, Fane is an unprincipled heel, using and hurting others and causing them to recoil from him. His life into a tailspin, he unexpectedly receives an Oscar nomination, which Kappy believes is the result of Fane's portrayal of ... As she states the name "Frank," Fane rises instantaneously, prepared to bolt to the stage; she then immediately follows with "Sinatra." As Frank Sinatra moves towards the stage, Fane is left with a completely stunned, crestfallen look, clapping his hands robotically, while everyone in the assemblage whom he has wronged enjoys the comeuppance for this wholly self-absorbed, unfeeling individual.

I really like this movie. It is very entertaining. In a nutshell, it is about a man (Stallone) who is a retired gangster or at least he is trying to be. He is married with a daughter who is grown but still lives at home. Throughout the movie, Stallone meets with different people in order to conduct business and during every visit, something crazy happens or there is an interruption that causes the visitor to have to wait some times hours before he gets to see Stallone. The wife interjects silly questions and the "hit men" are just going along with what is happening not really believing that their boss (Stallone) is serious about going clean. During Stallone's business transactions, finds out that his accountant is robbing him and he (Stallone) threatens him... I do not want to tell the ... I really like this movie. I have seen Oscar about 80ish times in My Life. Just claimed this copy and its been 20plus yrs since I have seen it before now. The characters play well off each other. It is one of those films is set w in a day and it is rather entertaining. Great ensemble cast.

Rare Movie For An Action Star
OSCAR displays Stallone's talent for portraying a comedic role that is all too often overlooked for action stars. With an all-star cast to back Sly up, this movie easily floats well. A not-so-unique plot sometimes slows this movie down, but all-in-all, OSCAR is a pretty funny movie. Sly plays an infamous gangster who promises his dying father (cameo by Kirk Douglas) to fly straight. This, however, proves difficult for our hero, with drawbacks such as a a mix up of 2 black bags, a daughter who changes fiances three times before lunch, a load of annoying visitors, scandalous bankers and more gangsters. OSCAR's cast includes the talents of Sylvester Stallone, Tim Curry (hilarious role! ), Linda Gray, Joey Travolta, Ornella Muti, Peter Reigert, Yvonne De Carlo, Marisa Tomei (I wish she still ...
