Le 13 janvier 1898, un article retentissant parait dans le journal L'Aurore, intitule J'Accuse... ! . Zola y prend nommement a partie les principaux responsables de la condamnation du capitaine Dreyfus. Il n'ignore pas qu'il court le risque d'un proces en diffamation, mais son coup de genie est de comprendre que c'est la le moyen de porter l'Affaire au grand jour - et devant la magistrature civile. C'est ce qui advient: condamne, Zola est contraint de s'exiler, mais la Verite est en marche . Cette lettre ouverte au president de la Republique n'est que le moment le plus celebre de l'action deployee par le romancier en faveur de Dreyfus. Lui-meme reunit en 1901 ses differentes interventions dans un ouvrage, La Verite en marche. Elles sont ici reprises et redeployees de maniere pleinement chronologique, et enrichies de nombreuses autres pages. On y trouve une veritable lecon de lucidite et d'ethique politique.Edition d'Henri Mitterand.
