About this product

Product Information

If you need a new hard drive that can keep up with all your data storage needs, the HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 could be the answer you have been searching for. The Ultrastar hard drive offers up to 4TB of space, which is also backed by a 2 million MTBF specification. This large storage space is ideal for those who have extensive media libraries, gamers, or those who use software programs that require plenty of memory. The HGST SATA III SSD has a 3.5-inch form factor, which can be installed in just a matter of minutes. In addition, the 7,200 RPM spindle speed makes reading and writing files faster. It uses the 6 Gb/s SATA interface with a sector size of 512e bytes. The rotational speed of 7200 rounds per minute and a data buffer cache of nearly 64MB makes it super economical despite the extra power. In addition, this 7K4000 HDD has a maximum transfer speed of 600 Mbps that is sustained at 171 Mbps for long durations. The durability is further enhanced by an extreme operating environment that can handle temperatures between 41 degrees and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. In idle mode, the hard drive can easily withstand extreme conditions between -40 degrees and 158 degrees Fahrenheit. The massive rotational speed of these types of drives is safeguarded by the innovative RVS system, enabling the drive to continue offering multitasking capabilities during long runs. Likewise, the thermal fly-height control is another significant safety feature that contains an internal thermal sensor to protect against disk errors.Built on the sixth-generation, five-platter design, the configuration of these HDST 7K4000 SATA series drives is trusted by the computing systems experts of the largest IT firms. In fact, this HGST Ultrastar can deliver improved watts per gigabyte while generating more efficiency in the same footprint. Accordingly, it delivers 24% lower watts per gigabyte for more efficient performance. For large data centers, this hardware helps them achieve lower AC power and HVAC requirements. Using less than one watt during standby mode and 59% less power in idle mode, it can help free a lot of capacity for a large enterprise. The advanced format capabilities of this 4TB Ultrastar increases error correcting ability and data storing capacity by increasing the sector size. As such, the size of an individual sector increases from 512 bytes to 4096 bytes. Power saving innovations like HiVERT technology and eighth-generation power management further increase energy efficiency and overall operating life. Overall, the HGST 7K4000 4TB Internal 7200 RPM, 3.5-inch HDD model is a real powerhouse. It is capable of not only storing large amounts of data, but it can also save your data from loss. It will energize any type of desktop computer, laptop, or server with a combination of extreme performance, capacity, and efficient operation. In addition, the sixth-generation power management and HiVERT technology help enhance the durability of this hardware. This Ultrastar hard drive will help increase your computer's capabilities on almost every level without compromise. The HGST Ultrastar has an incredible 2.0 million hours MTBF specification (power on hours), so it will serve your enterprise system for a long time.

      HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 (HUS724040ALE640)

Arrived quickly. The hard drive is new in the package. Opened it, checked SMART - indeed, the number of inclusions is 2. Tested the surface. Uniform, without bad sectors. Maximum speed at the beginning of the disk is 178 MB/sec. Minimum reading speed at the end of the disk is 80 MB/sec. Average search time is 9.5 ms. True, it makes a lot of noise during the search.

    • Too soon to tell

Since I bought this 4-year-old hard drive because it has a great reliability according to Backblaze, I will not know for several years if it has longevity as well as shorter term reliability. For now, it runs smoothly, but with a very slight ticking sound when it powers up. Would it have been better to buy a different brand of hard drive that is new? Only time will tell.

    • Cheap drives with high usage time advise running in RAID arrays.

Being enterprise drives they do have a much longer MTBF. They came with 64467 hours of usage (7.3yrs) so I'll be keeping the 1yr warranty card handy. With this much usage I would not run these standalone and use some level of RAID for protection of your data (I run mirrors). Remember there is a reason these are cheap.

    • Running comfortably

It is connected to a QNAP TS-653A and is running comfortably. it was manufactured about 10 years ago, so even new products rarely have problems.
