Praise for Craig Johnson: "It's the scenery--and the big guy standing in front of the scenery--that keeps us coming back to Craig Johnson's lean and leathery mysteries." -- The New York Times Book Review "Johnson's hero only gets better--both at solving cases and at hooking readers--with age." -- Publishers Weekly Praise for An Obvious Fact : "Thrilling . . . Whether he's squaring off against biker gangs or teasing out long-simmering feuds involving his closest friends, Walt Longmire is always the man for the job." -- Publishers Weekly "A Walt Longmire novel is like going on a ride-along with an old friend, watching him ferret out the bad guys with wit and humanity (and more than a few bullets), while we swap stories and catch up on old times...it's An Obvious Fact--it's good to have Walt back on the scene." --Mystery Scene More Praise for Craig Johnson and the Walt Longmire Mystery Series: "Like the greatest crime novelists, Johnson is a student of human nature. Walt Longmire is strong but fallible, a man whose devil-may-care stoicism masks a heightened sensitivity to the horrors he's witnessed." -- Los Angeles Times "Johnson's trademarks [are] great characters, witty banter, serious sleuthing, and a love of Wyoming bigger than a stack of derelict cars." --The Boston Globe "Stepping into Walt's world is like slipping on a favorite pair of slippers, and it's where those slippers lead that provides a thrill. Johnson pens a series that should become a 'must' read, so curl up, get comfortable, and enjoy the ride." -- The Denver Post

    Synopsis
The thirteenth novel in Craig Johnson's beloved New York Times bestselling Longmire series, the basis for the hit Netflix series Longmire Sheriff Walt Longmire is enjoying a celebratory beer after a weapons certification at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy when a younger sheriff confronts him with a photograph of twenty-five armed men standing in front of a Challenger steam locomotive. It takes him back to when, fresh from the battlefields of Vietnam, then-deputy Walt accompanied his mentor Lucian to the annual Wyoming Sheriff's Association junket held on the excursion train known as the Western Star, which ran the length of Wyoming from Cheyenne to Evanston and back. Armed with his trusty Colt .45 and a paperback of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express , the young Walt was ill-prepared for the machinations of twenty-four veteran sheriffs, let alone the cavalcade of curious characters that accompanied them. The photograph--along with an upcoming parole hearing for one of the most dangerous men Walt has encountered in a lifetime of law enforcement--hurtles the sheriff into a head-on collision of past and present, placing him and everyone he cares about squarely on the tracks of runaway revenge.

Overall, this purchase was good. The book arrived on time and quickly, which I was pleased about. The book came in as described, a little better too. The only thing i was uncertain with was the packaging. It arrived with nothing but the standard packaging (the black plastic thing not sure what it’s called 😅). I wish it just had a little bit more extra packaging to ensure its condition. Other than that, amazing service and delivery, great value, quality, and appearance, saved alot of money

      24 Sheriffs and a Deputy

Good guys, bad guys, good guys who may be bad guys, a whodunit, action, suspense, a kidnapping, and a steam locmotive. 24 sheriffs on a train, and a clear nod to Agatha Christie. What more could you want? Well, the characters are multifaceted, and the story complex, weaving back and forth across twenty-five years. If you're a fan of Craig Johnson's character Walt Longmire, you'll love this look at his earliest days as a deputy, and meet his wife. Through the magic of storytelling, the story includes Vic, Ruby, Henry and Cady as well.

    • Top critical review

Not as good as the video series..

Normally I like the book better than the tv rendition but this story was hard to follow and was slow moving for such a thin book. The story as written keeps jumping back and forth in time and, although this works when its on video it is tiresome in this case. I won't buy any more of the series.

    • Another out of the park thriller

This latest effort by Craig Johnson proves again that there are few contemporary writers working in the western genre who can do this type of work on a consistent basis. I group him in the same camp as CJ Box, who also exceeds the readers expectations every time. The Western Star is a story that leaves you wanting more adventures of Walt and his compatriots.

    • Back and forth but answers questions

I enjoy Walt Longmire always, but this was particularly good. It goes back and forth in time, but he carefully lets you know which is which.
