About this product

Product Information

Though the slasher film parody has become well-trodden ground since the birth of the teenage body count genre in the late 1970s, screenwriters Scott Glosserman and David J. Stieve--who are clearly fans of the genre--find some new blood to let out of the serial killer comedy in BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON. The film adds elements of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999) and HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1986), and centers on a grad student named Taylor (Angela Goethals). Taylor is making a documentary about Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesal), a killer-in-the-making who has a dark legend surrounding him in his small Maryland hometown. Leslie's plan incorporates all the necessary factors to put him in the same situations that allowed his heroes Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers to continue killing through sequel after sequel, right down to singling out the virginal heroine who will be the one to stop him after he knocks off her promiscuous friends. Unfortunately, Taylor has a larger role in Leslie's plans than she knows, but when she finally realizes that she can't just sit back and film his killing spree, it may be too late to stop him. The first half of BEHIND THE MASK is the funny part. Baesal, whose dry delivery often resembles Will Ferrell's, makes us forget that Leslie's planning to do some horrible things. But when the killing actually starts, the film becomes a bona fide slasher itself---and is often as good as the classics that it good-naturedly apes. Robert "Freddy Krueger" Englund lends some cred in a sharp supporting role, as does Scott Wilson, best known for his portrayal of a real killer in Richard Brooks's IN COLD BLOOD.

  • Behind the Mask - A different kind of Horror

As a short and sweet review, this movie takes the piss on the Horror genre, but still being an effective horror movie itself. In a documentary style format, the killer is known from the beginning of the movie and he tells the audience all the secrets and tribulations of a serial killer / mass murderer. A group of college kids with cameras follow him around like he is a big joke, filming his training regime. Some of the comments in this movie are hilarious, including the reference of parts of the female anatomy in relation to the Horror concept. In the last 30 minutes the heat really turns up! The actor that plays the killer is one of a kind, you can not keep your eyes off him (Nathan Baesel). The cast also includes classic horror actors/actresses Robert Englund and Zelda Rubinstein. The ...

  • A Wierd Twist on the Typical Horror Movie

I liked this movie while watching it and actually thought it was one of the better movies I've bought lately, but after I sat down to write this I'm not so sure I liked it all that much! It's different, I will give it that. It's wierd, funny and the acting is really not so bad. Lesile is really convincing as a killer and gives you chills at the way he talks about killing people. I liked that part, but the actual killing parts are too predictable. I also noticed there is almost no screaming in this movie, you never knew when someone "got it". Kind of odd for a supposed HORROR movie. I'm glad I bought it but it probably isn't one I would watch again. Get it for cheap and be happy!

  • Great Movie

This is one of my favorite movies. It incorporates horror with comedy. It is a parody on the classic horror slasher films, like Voorhees, Myers and Krueger. The acting is excellent. I strongly recommend watching this film.

  • BORING!!! Need to fall asleep? Watch this movie.

This movie was the biggest piece of crap. I spent the first 40 minutes tring to figure out what the hell was going on. Not only did it not make any sense it was very boring. I ended up falling asleep for a good 10 minutes. Woke up asked my girlfriend what had happened. She said i don't know its hard to follow. At this time the movie was over an hour in. Finally the guy starts to go on his killing spree. By the time this happens you just want to take the movie out and throw it across the room. I didn't understand how this movie got such great reviews. It was very boring!!! Do yourself a favor and avoid this movie unless you need a nap.

  • Behind the mask

It is the best horror spoof that I've ever seen. Like Scream it tend to analyze the horror genre, however Behind the mask takes a much deeper look at the killing set up and the "rules" that killers have to follow. But where it truely shines through is where it turns into a slasher film, it has a delicate plot twist that few can predict and the percission killings at the end serve to make Behind the Mask one of the better horror films of the decade.
