DVDs from past years are better
I had seen the movie years ago but I didn't remember a lot of it but I was hoping that the quality of the DVD would be good and it is. The colors, the sound and the clarity are all fine.

Helen Slater was the Star of the SUPERGIRL Movie... Which Was Based on the Comic Book Title Helen, born in 1963, was the star of the 1984 theatrical movie 'Supergirl'. She is known as an actress and a singer-songwriter. Helen attended Manhattan's School of Performing Arts, graduating in 1982. (Today she is an accomplished pianist with two solo albums in 2004 & 2005.) Within months of her graduating, she attended auditions for an upcoming spin-off movie of the famous Superman (1978) film franchise. The film was to be shot in the United Kingdom at the Pinewood studios, where the first Superman films were filmed. . After being the first to audition for the Supergirl role she won it. Although the Supergirl film received mixed reviews at its opening, most critics were impressed with her ... Helen Slater was the Star of the SUPERGIRL Movie... Marc McClure reprised his role as Jimmy Olsen in this film as he had in Superman, but something was missing.... maybe Superman in a cameo?? Faye Dunaway was over the top as the primary villain in the movie, and the movie did not pull good reviews or box office money. The movie is technically of the same series that Christopher Reeves did as Superman from 1978 -1987 but is usually not included in any boxed sets of the movies.

Supergirl.... Super-disappointing
Having spent my developing years in the '50s and '60s, and having been fortunate enough to watch the late George (Beselow) Reeves playing the roles of Clark Kent and Superman about as well as anyone ever could, it was tremendously disappointing to watch this illogical, boring, mish-mash of an excuse for a movie. Ms. Slater is an attractive young woman, who gave a much more credible and creditable performance in the Michael J. Fox vehicle, The Secret of My Success, The producers of Supergirl must have decided that an 'unknown' actress would be much preferred over having an established actress who almost certainly would have outshined the Girl of Steel. I can't imagine what could have convinced such liminary A-list actors and actresses like Peter (Lawrence of Arabia) O'Toole and Faye ... I'm supposed to be reviewing the unrated version of this movie, and for the sake of full disclosure, I have NOT seen this unrated version, BUT unless they edited and reshot the majority of this picture, I can only believe the vast majority of what I originally saw, all those years ago, is still the nuts and bolts of THIS version. Nowadays, when a movie makes anything CLOSE to a profit, they producers rush like the Dickens to get a sequel into the marketplace. You know.... strike while the iron is hot. There was NO sequel to this movie. The producers probably didn't want to throw good money after 'bad'. Remember the hub-bub over the mistake on the box of the video tape of the movie. They put a picture of the Statue of Liberty on it, only someone must have been asleep at the switch and the picture was reversed. Lady Liberty seemed to be holding the torch uplifted in her left hand, not the right hand. I wonder what Ms. Slater is doing lately. M. Zeitschik

In the mid-80's, Supergirl piggybacked the success and storyline of the Christopher Reeve Superman films. Supergirl offers some of the majesty of those Superman films and also offer different characters and manners of telling a story. Instead of pulling heavly from the world of Superman, new characters are created for the movie. The nature of the film is quite different, however, her fish-out-of-water element is there as is the Phantom Zone and of course, Jimmy Olson. The film is also produced by the same people. The similaries for the most part end there. After the Superman II (some would say after Superman: The Movie), the focus on the franchised and this movie partly falls victim to that. My favorite tv show is Smallville in which the DC Comic character named: Supergirl is returning to the Smallville's tenth season and final season of Smallville. Supergirl: Special Edition is a movie that does not follow the DC Comics. There is Witch Craft, Phantom Zone, Monsters, Love and more including Marc A. McClure which play as Jimmy Olsen in the Superman movies with Christopher D'Olier Reeve is in this movie. I first saw this movie back in the 1980s before I was ten years old and I love the flying for it is better than the Superman movies starring Christopher D'Olier Reeve. I love this version of the Supergirl's outfit for it is my favorite better than her outfit in the 1990s' Superman the Animated Series. The best acting came from Supergirl, Ethan and Jimmy everybody else acting is ...
