Synopsis
When you're chasing a dream, does it matter where you come from? Upper-class Lucy Graham is expected simply to marry well. Poverty-stricken Rosie Nesbitt struggles just to get by. Both girls share the unlikely dream to become a doctor, and each will do anything to succeed. When their paths cross at a party filled with eligible bachelors it soon becomes clear that their chosen career isn't the only desire they share. With society's conventions stacked against them and war raging on the continent, Lucy and Rosie must draw their own battle lines in their fight for love, life and happiness. But can they both succeed? Two incredible young women are drawn together by their dreams . . . and broken apart by love and war. Perfect for fans of Nadine Dorries, Rita Bradshaw and Kitty Neale., From the diplomatic homes of Washington DC to the slums of Dundee, from wealthy landowners to the mud of the trenches, two female doctors from very different backgrounds are drawn together by their shared loves. 1888-1923, Dundee Upper-class Lucy Graham has always been highly intelligent and fiercely independent. When she tells her parents of her plans to follow her dream of becoming a doctor instead of marrying and having children, her mother refuses to acknowledge her wishes, seeing her decision as an embarrassment to the family. Meanwhile, in a poorer district of Dundee, Rosie Nesbitt lives a difficult life with her mother and siblings in a house that is too small for all of of them. Equally intelligent, Rosie decides that she wants to become a doctor and create a life for herself that is better than the one she has had growing up. She, too, faces issues - albeit different ones from those of Lucy - and she and her family must fight and make sacrifices for her to receive the education she needs. As the two girls' paths cross, their chosen career isn't the only thing they have in common. They first meet at a party hosted by Kier Anderson-Howard, a potential husband for Lucy, but an eligible man who has his sights set on Rosie. As war approaches, Lucy's and Rosie's lives become complicated by love and loss, and the paths leading to their goals testing their resolves to the limit., When you're chasing a dream, does it matter where you come from?Upper-class Lucy Graham is expected simply to marry well. - 6***6 (74)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThis delivery was earliest date! Condition, value, quality - all as described. (My mistake was not requiring the publishing date to be 1958. This was 1977.) This IS a Viking Portable Library copy of Dante's Divine Comedy in English, translated by Laurence Binyon, but it is with a cover DIFFERENT from what was shown. The tracking number was listed as from "UPS", but should have been listed as from "USPS." Contact with this seller alleviated tracking issues. I recommend this seller! Thank you!
- p***a (187)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseI purchased two books from the same seller; both were accurately advertised in product write ups. - h***5 (582)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseArrived 13 days after purchase. Digipak 3 CD came in brown paper packaging coated on the inside. Not much protection for cardboard digipack, somehow it arrived in near perfect condition. Could have used some bubble wrap /sturdy cardboard. Tracking gave no information. Messaged them & they assured me it was on it's way. Location reads Florida. They ship from all over / my package read Jamaica, NY. Got a 3 CD Deluxe Edition in GREAT CONDITION at BARGAIN PRICE ! Nervous ride/Happy ending 😀👍
