About this product

Product Information

THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL is a slapstick comedy starring Burt Lancaster as cavalry officer Col. Thadeus Gearhart, set just before the winter of 1867, when the boomtown of Denver realizes it's almost run out of whiskey. The perenially drunken Oracle Jones (Donald Pleasence) hatches a plan to bring a wagon train of whiskey to Denver before winter sets in. Newspaper editor Hobbs wires temperance leader Cora Massingale (Lee Remick) about the shipment, and a group of Sioux Indians also takes an interest in the booze. Col. Gearheart leads a company assigned to protect the temperance contingent, which intends to head off the train, and Capt. Slater (Jim Hutton) leads another, assigned to protect the train. A Denver citizens group, led by Clayton Howell (Dub Taylor), is also headed for the train, not to mention the Sioux. When the Teamsters suddenly stage a sit-down strike, the train is left wide open to attack. This odd little film, based on the novel by Bill Gulick, features a star-studded cast and a score by the great Elmer Bernstein.

    Need a Laugh

First time I saw this movie I had tears rolling down my face. I couldn't stop laughing. This has got to be one of the funniest westerns I have ever seen. It has a great cast of actors and actresses. If anything happened to this disc; I would have to buy another. It is one that I watch now and again. I highly recommend this movie to any western movie lover.

  • The Hallelujah Trail (2001, DVD)

Academy Award Winner's Burt Lancaster and Martin Landau team with Oscar Nominee" Lee Remick along with Jim Hutton Brian Keith and Donld Pleasence, along with others. In this beautifully filmed epic adventure which "wins both laughs and thrills" (The Hollywood Reporter) This Is A Very Funny Movie! What I Like about this movie, Is that it has a Cartoon Style about it, ther's alot of misunderstanding, and everyone runs around with there heads cut off.(A Matter Of Speeking) The Indians are very confused, and the Soldier's and everyone else are trying to get Whiskey to there destination that never arrives. What I Dislike about the Movie! there is'nt anything about the movie itself I dislike, the only thing I dont care for is that on this disk, they put the ORINGINAL Movie Version from the ...

  • Hallelujah for DVD!!

I've loved this movie since I was a kid. I was able to find it on VHS several years ago, but the Panavision shots were too wide for the standard TV format. This DVD, in widescreen, keeps all of the original movie shots, without any of the annoying panning back and forth that was on the VHS version. The only thing I didn't like about the DVD was that there is a very long musical overture before the movie starts - and I'm OK with that - except that there is nothing but a black screen during this - and this is the very first thing you get when you start the movie. Some sort of titling saying "Overture", or something like that would have been nice - at first, I wasn't sure if the disk was defective or what. Aside from that, it's a great move, done well on DVD, the picture and sound are ...

  • Excellent Western Comedy

I guess I'm reliving my childhood, searching out old films I have recollections of viewing with my parents so many years ago on a black and white television with rabbit ears and aluminum foil. This film always ranked high on my list of enjoyable films any member of the family could watch. My daughter while all of 14 years old, has developed an uncanny appreciation of classic films, particularly comdey, so when I found this at a reasonable price, I had to purchase the dvd. Even though suitable for everyone, there are suggestive scenes done well and so subtly handled as to make adults smile without creating uncomfortable silences. Burt Lancaster, Lee Remick, and the rest of the all star cast turned in excellent performances making this a film I can't wait to share with grandchildren.

  • Thank you for making the title available. Memories last forever -- with a little help. In ths case -- from E-Bay.

I saw the Hallelujah Trail when it was first released and member considering it as one of the best western comedies I had ever seen. Over the years I literally "forgot" the name of the movie but remembered the slap-stick, hilarious, comedic presentation. Discovering the movie on E-Bay was wonderful and I am simply thrilled that I now have a copy and that I can share the memories with my "grandchildren." It has been that many years. Jack Childs
