    Comedy Becomes Tragedy

    The whole premise of the story was just too unbelievable so I viewed as a satire of the Foreign Legion.. But when things got completely ridiculous it just became an anti-war tragedy. No, I did not view it as an advertisement for the French Foreign Legion; Who would want to subject themselves to abuse by their officers and the harsh climate and then face an enemy who outnumbered them 10 to 1? Great cast, good acting, some clever writing and realistic sets .... it was very entertaining. Just not very convincing this could happen anywhere else but the author's head..

    Great story starring Gary Cooper

    This movie is the best film adaptation of the novel by P C Wren with a great cast. First off you have Gary Cooper as Beau, he is a great actor from the Golden Age of Hollywood. You also have Brian Donlevy as the sadistic Sgt Markoff which he plays perfectly, as well as Ray Milland and Robert Preston as Beau's brothers. In a nut shell the story revolves around a stolen gem, leading Beau to disappear to cover for his brothers. He ends up in the French Foreign Legion. Of course his brothers won't let Beau to take the fall for the crime. Knowing Beau as they do they are certain he has headed to join the Legion so they leave to follow him. They end up in the same unit as Beau in the desert outpost under the sadistic Sgt Markoff. The story just gets better from there, adventure, ...

    Beau Geste is a great film. If you love action, romance, sentimentality, honor codes and wish we lived in such a world today, this is your film. Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, And Robert Preston play brothers who stand shoulder to shoulder with each other facing all of life's perils and rewards. Made in the Hollywood golden year of 1939, Beau Geste belongs in every serious film buff's DVD collection.

    Beau Gestes or does he?

    Great escapism movie with a twist that had me enthralled till the end. Without giving away too much the movie starts a little slow but quickly moves along at a crisp pace with a finally that had me glued to the screen till the final seconds. One learns from the get go that this movie must have been a great recruitment or turn-off (depending on how one looks at it) for the French Foreign Legion (Legion Entrangere)especially for English speakers, by the way English is not spoken in the Legion. Anyways, I highly recommend this film if but for its shear enjoyment and chance to get away from everything for an hour or so. kiweez1 Arlington Heights, Illinois. USA
