A Symphony of Metal
If you enjoy metal, heavy rock, or Bach or Beethoven, give it a listen. Don't want to shell out the $$ without being sure of what you're getting into? Look up Metallica S&M on YouTube and you can get a decent taste of the DVD... no where near the quality in sound or video, but a taste. I've awaited the DVD release of this tour for years, don't ask why it took me a decade, it just did. Maybe I wanted the quality of the remastered edition, and of course the price at about what a new DVD movie release costs is a long ways from initial costs. For this you get two DVD's each crammed with full length, 2 1/2 hours of uninterrupted footage of the concert, with a full four tracks, giving hours of angles, alternate footage and so on. The variety of songs is excellent, ranging from the then-new release no-leaf clover back to 'Call of Ktulu' and fav's such as 'Nothing Else Matters', 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and (mine) 'Wherever I May Roam'. The songs are usually around eight minutes, lots of energy, some great shots of all the band and the various symphony members, especiall the Conductor. Finally, add an internet connection and you have interactive content! You will need a DVD codec if you want to use it with your PC, which should have come with your DVD drive anyways. (PC DVD-ROM or DVD+/-RW, Home DVD Players will have no trouble) This is a Region 1 DVD, so it's only going to work on Region 1 (USA) DVD players...

Metallica and Symphony is absolute perfection
This is by far the best way to view Metallica because the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra with Michael Kamen is a perfect way to showcase Metallica and their unlimited talents. This is such a classic blending which makes music more than just a listening pleasure. It goes way beyond a listening experience, it is truly a work of art. I already had this in VHS form for many years, but needed a cleaner version to view and share with friends who haven't had the pleasure to experiencing Metallica live. This showcases some of their best works and when paired with a full orchestra, it becomes a favorite video just to watch from time to time. This video is filmed very nicely, showing some neat closeups of the orchestra, as well as closeups of Kirk Hammett as he works his magic on his guitar ... This is by far the best way to view Metallica because the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra with Michael Kamen is a perfect way to showcase Metallica and their unlimited talents. Madness vs Melody
I purchased this for my fiance and watched it with him. He is a huge Metallica fan, and I, personally, am NOT a fan of heavy metal; however, I actually enjoyed this. The collaboration of Michael Kamen and the orchestra with Metallica is a lush and exciting combination of modern electricity with classical strings set against a melange of bass notes provided by a cellos, basses, and the electric bass guitar. The result is surprisingly coherent and, for a non-heavy metal/Metallica fan, quite compelling. The performance delivers so much depth and fullness, it leaves the audience and the ears incredibly energized and satisfied. I know that die-hard Metallica fans love vocalist James Hetfield and his lyrics, but I definitely would have LOVED this even more sans vocals...just the gorgeous ... I purchased this for my fiance and watched it with him. He is a huge Metallica fan, and I, personally, am NOT a fan of heavy metal; however, I actually enjoyed this.
