Synopsis
More than a half-century ago the Canadian Wildlife Service assigned the naturalist Farley Mowat to investigate why wolves were killing arctic caribou. Mowat's account of the summer he lived in the frozen tundra alone-studying the wolf population and developing a deep affection for the wolves (who were of no threat to caribou or man) and for a friendly Inuit tribe known as the Ihalmiut ("People of the Deer")-is a work that has become cherished by generations of readers, an indelible record of the myths and magic of wild wolves., By enquiring into the puzzle of sibling relations, Frank J. Sulloway pioneers a new view of how family affects individual development. He shows that birth-order is so fundamental to the family that it transcends gender, class and nationality.

I didn't see a verbal description of this book as "hardcover" or paperback. Cover design and price were similar to both cover styles. I thought I'd left a question for the seller, but I may have done something wrong. The package was too small to match the hardcovers previously received so I returned it unopened. Seller was very efficient, and packaging offered excellent protection. Haven't checked to see if refund was processed.

  • Mowat is a fantastic writer!

I discovered Farley Mowat several years ago. His writing is factual and exciting, hard to put down! He writes about what he has either experienced first-hand, or reseached exhaustively. He has great good humor, endearing himself to the reader in the first few pages. I bought this book for my nephew for Christmas, but held it back because I feel that it is a bit over his 12 year old head. Mr. Mowat doesn't use "baby talk" that is so prevalent in books for kids these days. That is not to say that this book is for kids. On the contrary, Mr. Mowat's books are for everybody. My nephew loves wolves, and after he reads this book (which I will give to him in a year or two) he will love them even more. This book describes Mowat's time spent living among wolves up in Canada. It is absolutely ...
