About this product

Product Information

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood-the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers-Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah-the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that are to sustain her through a damaged youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate, immediate connection. Deeply affecting, "The Red Tent "combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of Biblical women's society.

The wives of Jacob gather in the red tent, and in that image Anita Diamant has found the heart of a pulsing and moving novel. The tent is red because of the falling sun, and because of the flowing blood. The tent is, as the narrator says, 'an earthbound rainbow,' which is also true of this novel. Dinah, famously a daughter and a sister, finally tells her own story-and the story of that unknown legion, God's women. When the light is refracted through their experience-and through the lens of Anita Diamant's moral imagination-the colors couldn't be more vivid, and the oldest story of all could never seem more original, or more true., "The wives of Jacob gather in the red tent, and in that image Anita Diamant has found the heart of a pulsing and moving novel. Excellent seller -- good communication, item exactly as described, reasonably priced, well packed. Seller shipped immediately but the book took over half a month to arrive, due to the carrier used on the first leg, to get the package to USPS.

  • An Elegant Historical FICTION of Biblical Times

Anita Diamant's novel "The Red Tent" is an exquisite historical fiction of biblical times, detailing the lives of Rachel and Leah, the two wives of Jacob and, ultimately, the story of Dinah, the daughter of Leah. The title refers to the tent that the women of the tribe must live in while experiencing their "time of the month" or when giving birth. The story arc carries the reader through the main characters lives as they become midwives, illumiinating the experiences they share with other women within their times and culture. The novel is actually written in two parts, each connected by familial bonds. The first, and shorter of the two, encompasses the story of Rachel and Leah. Diamant provides many factual, historical details and broadcasts them throughout her natrrative, giving the ...

  • Sarah's Review

I loved this book!! It was great b/c it gave me the chance to think about how women functioned daily before the world became modern. It also made me feel for the first time that I as a woman should embrace the fact that women have menstration cycles and that is something to be proud of. The Bible speaks of this woman Dinah, but only a few verses, this book goes into detail. It is a very very good read.

  • The Red Tent - amazing

This is my favorite book. There is nothing out there like this. The best part of this book is that it really gives an idea of what life was like during that time period. It is fiction mixed with religion. It is fantastic and is good for anyone of any faith, even no faith at all. It isn't in your face, just about women and the time period.
