1998 Cate Blanchetts 1st Portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I
If having prior viewed "Anne of a Thousand Days" with Sir Richard Burton as Henry VIII, it would be the best set-up for viewing Cate Blanchett's outstanding portrayal of Queen Elizabeth 1 (1533-1603). I'll briefly summarize what's in my review of "Anne..." so that this review of "Elizabeth" makes more sense. The Anne in question is, of course, Anne Boleyn--a young woman who became the 2nd wife of Henry VIII, which was the cause of considerable political & religious controversy. Seems King Henry was discontent with his 1st wife & daughter because he wanted a son to heir his throne. Smitten by the teenager, Anne, he fiercely persued her until she fell in love with him. Trouble was, the Catholicized United Kingdom experienced political religious controversies over Prostestantism. Thus, ... So he mades a few significant political & religious changes so that he could divorce his 1st wife & marry Anne (for 1,000 days). Instead of delivering a son, Anne also gives birth to a daughter, Elizabeth. Afterwards, Henry VIII brings another beauty to his court, Jane Seymore, beginning an affair with her. Then, has Anne beheaded. But, before she dies, she makes him sign a decry that their daughter will become queen. "Elizabeth" opens with her step-sister, Mary, Henry VIII's 1st daughter, jealous of Elizabeth, who is grown up. Elizabeth is arrested for heresy because she is not Catholic, as if she has plotted against Mary, the Queen. When catholic Queen Mary dies quite quickly after being diagnosed with cancer & has no heir, succession goes to Elizabeth, her protestant half-sister who she was holding prisoner in the tower. But, on her death bed Mary cannot execute Elizabeth. Elizabeth now Queen of England, France & Ireland, is surrounded by all men advisors, including ones who are plotting to seat a Catholic on the throne: especially, by forcing Elizabeth to marry a Catholic & produce an heir. As Queen, she is the property of the people. Thus, she cannot marry her lover, Lord Robert Dudley. Since she is under pressure to marry & produce an heir, but her lover, Lord Robert Dudley, is considered unsuitable because he is already married--unbeknownst to Elizabeth--she's targeted for marriage or murder. After being sought after by nearly every single royal, then entertaining one who's been pushed upon her to marry & she catches him having an orgy dressed up just as she is, in women's clothes, Elizabeth announces that there will only a "1 mistress" in the court & "no master." During her reign, she creates The Church of England, with a common book & common purpose, that does not answer to the Pope. Religion is so conflated with political power that throughout her reign she'll have her mettle tested repeatedly to aggress against Catholics who plot & try to murder her & she resists calls for war. In a final act of independence & power of free conscience, Queen Elizabeth I, cuts off her long red hair, places a marriage ring on her finger, announces to the court that she is "married to England." From then she's called, "The Virgin Queen." Blanchett's portrayal is beyond excellent. She becomes the personification of the Queen. The film was nominated for Best Picture, Actress, Cinematography, Art & Set Direction, Costume Design & Dramatic Score. In 1999, an Oscar was Won for Best Makeup by Jenny Shircore. Now to the sequel, "Elizabeth: The Golden Age"~
