Synopsis
A political, social and cultural battle is currently raging across the Middle East. On one side are the Islamists, those who believe Islam should be the region's primary identity. Opposing them are nationalists, secularists, royal families, military establishments and others who view Islamism as a serious threat to national security, historical identity and a cohesive society. In this provocative and vitally important work, Tarek Osman provides fresh insight into islamist movements and what their thinking, operations and future portend for the region and the Western world Book jacket., An incisive analysis of Islamist movements in the Middle East A political, social, and cultural battle is currently raging in the Middle East. On one side are the Islamists, those who believe Islam should be the region's primary identity. In opposition are nationalists, secularists, royal families, military establishments, and others who view Islamism as a serious threat to national security, historical identity, and a cohesive society. This provocative, vitally important work explores the development of the largest, most influential Islamic groups in the Middle East over the past century. Tarek Osman examines why political Islam managed to win successive elections and how Islamist groups in various nations have responded after ascending to power. He dissects the alliances that have formed among Islamist factions and against them, addressing the important issues of Islamism's compatibility with modernity, with the region's experiences in the twentieth century, and its impact on social contracts and minorities. He explains what Salafism means, its evolution, and connections to jihadist groups in the Middle East. Osman speculates on what the Islamists' prospects for the future will mean for the region and the rest of the world.

- 6***6 (73)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThis delivery was earliest date! Condition, value, quality - all as described. (My mistake was not requiring the publishing date to be 1958. This was 1977.) This IS a Viking Portable Library copy of Dante's Divine Comedy in English, translated by Laurence Binyon, but it is with a cover DIFFERENT from what was shown. The tracking number was listed as from "UPS", but should have been listed as from "USPS." Contact with this seller alleviated tracking issues. I recommend this seller! Thank you!
- p***a (187)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseI purchased two books from the same seller; both were accurately advertised in product write ups. Seller responded promptly and securely packaged both books for swift arrival. I am very happy with my purchase and highly recommend this seller.
- h***5 (582)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseArrived 13 days after purchase. Digipak 3 CD came in brown paper packaging coated on the inside. Not much protection for cardboard digipack, somehow it arrived in near perfect condition. Could have used some bubble wrap /sturdy cardboard. Tracking gave no information. Messaged them & they assured me it was on it's way. Location reads Florida. They ship from all over / my package read Jamaica, NY. Got a 3 CD Deluxe Edition in GREAT CONDITION at BARGAIN PRICE ! Nervous ride/Happy ending 😀👍
