About this product

Product Information

Director Hugh Hudson's absorbing drama, based on a true story, deals with the personal struggles faced by two very different long-distance runners competing for Britain in the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson) is a devout Christian who sees victory as a testament to the glory of God, while the other, Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross), is a Jewish Cambridge student who sees victory as a challenge to anti-Semitism and his ongoing struggle for acceptance by Britain's elite. Eric, a hometown Scottish hero to the people, gives rousing sermons after victory and works at a local missionary. Harold runs with a zealous commitment, upsetting Cambridge's educational upper crust (played with enjoyable wit and candor by Sir John Gielgud and Lindsay Anderson) while enjoying social life with his university chums and his beautiful showgirl girlfriend (Alice Krige). But when faced with such a competent challenger, Harold hires trainer Sam Mussabini (Ian Holm) to further his dreams of winning the gold. Ultimately, the two runners meet in Paris to run for British victory in a rousing finale. Featuring an unforgettable soundtrack by Vangelis, this Academy Award-winning film is an inspirational story of athletic excellence and spiritual awakening that captures the zeal of post-WWI Britain and the glory of the Olympics.

3 Olympians show true nobility on and off track field

must pay close attention at beginning of movie to keep main characters straight. One in particular a bit long feature wise, but enjoyed the 2 "L's" story lines. Not enough screen time at end of the movie to see what happened to their post Olympian win days.

  • Chariots of Fire

This is one of the greatest movies of all time. We have watched it at least 30 times. The movie is based on real. life events in the life of Eric Littel from 1920-1924. He then became a Christian missionary to China and died in a Japanese prison camp at the end of WWII. However, the movie never gets that far. It focuses on Littel's participation in the 1924 Olympics in Paris and the events leading up to them. I have read many accounts of his life and find that some of the details are "hollywoodized" for cinmatic purposes, but the basic theme of the movie is true to fact. The movie is very well done in every aspect. The many sporting events are filmed in the most creative and interesting manner I have ever seen. There is no wonder why Chariots of Fire won the Academy Award for best ...

  • One for the Ages

This is a film that I have found profoundly moving, incredibly enjoyable and deeply satisfying for 25 years. I've seen it a number of times, and now that video stores no longer carry it, I'm buying the 2 disc DVD. A film that won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, should not be out of circulation. Don't listen to people who will tell you it is an elitist fantasy: remember that there actually was, and occasionally still is, a time when people do great things for good reasons. It is a true story and in this case the British used some real research to make it right and make it ring true. Rise above the cynicism that has invariably cast its net over all of us because of the deeds of the politicos in Washington, DC.

  • chariots fo fire review

This is a well done Movie that instills the 4th Commandment "Thou shall honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy". In this culture, this, and the other commandments, that Jesus Christ ordained, have been neglected. This movie reminds the viewer that just because a sinfull culture has changed does not mean a just and all-perfect God has changed (He is Everlasting to Everlasting). The movie brings the viewer back to a time when dress was more honorable and how a person spoke and carried him/herself had more dignity. Great movie. By the way, Since the risen Lord rose on the first day of the week (Sunday), it is understood by most true born-again Christians that the Lords Day/Sabbath is now on Sunday of course. There are some cultish sects who consider the Sabbath to be held on ...

  • One of the best movies ever

This is probably the movie I would choose as my favorite movie ever. It's one of the few movies I've paid to see more than once in the theaters, and I'm thrilled to now own it on DVD. The cinematography and music are outstanding, as is the acting, and I love the complex interweaving of several different plot lines: the Olympics, British class / racial attitudes and the treatment of Harold Abrahams as a Jew, and of course, the tension faced by Eric Liddell in balancing his strong Christian faith with his love of running and sports. Simply outstanding and very worthy of its Best Picture win.
