    Warm classic crunch

After I had already replaced a rattling stock set of KT66 power tubes, I replaced the stock 12AX7s in my Marshall Astoria Custom with a set of Mullards CV4004 12AX7s. They are a touch less aggressive than stock Marshall tubes, which I prefer. They are much warmer with a nice round lowend tone. I can get some very nice clean tones on the low input but they can really bring the classic Marshall crunch with the gain turned up. They turned "amazing" up to "11" on an already amazing amp. They look well made. All pins were nice and straight and all internals look sturdy. If there is any downside, and this is really picking nits, I wish the label ink was better defined. All in all, if you are looking for classic rock gain and tone, you can't go wrong with these.

  • Better than the JJ tubes I was using

I won't bash tubes but I noticed a difference switching from JJ to using Mullard in my 100w Plexi head....I am also using Mullard 12ax7 and swap out V1 pre-amp for a vintage 60's Bugle Boy....My amp is chimes on low and breaks up like EVH when I push it.... Mullard is a no brainier if you want to up grade your tone....Mine are EL34 but I may get them again in 6550 or KT77 which are all similar voltage just slightly different characteristics relating to compression.... EL34 is a do all tube that's a tad bit mid bit, the KT77 is a tighter bass and treble with a smoother mid and the 6550 is the more compressed gain that breaks up faster than the other two....

  • Quiet 12ax7

I have had everything pretty much in my pre's. Tung Sol, electro Harmonix, JJ's, GT and I did all kinds of testing. The Tung Sol sounded exactly the same as the mullard but the mullard was quieter. Electro Harmonix we're good too but I think mullard has them all beat.

  • Seeburg Jukebox

My Jukebox always had to much base. It also hade all long plate different name tubes. Bought four Mullard short plate 12AX7s for our Seeburg 222 and now it has nice high tones.

  • My new favorite 12ax7

This is a very low-microphonic tube, very "clean" for a 12ax7. Amp is noiseless on startup. Seem to have a bit more headroom than your average 12ax7 and have a nice compression and breakup to them. Perhaps a bit more compressed than a standard Mullard reissue 12ax7 imo. I decided to go with 5751 in v1 and v2 of JVM to tame it but was impressed by these. Far warmer and more organic to my ears than Chinese 12ax7s which sound fizzy and kinda harsh to my ear. My new favorite newer production 12ax7/ ECC83 tube that work well in all positions.
