About this product
Product Information
A popular anime series set in the early 1990s and based on the manga by Shuici Shigeno, INITIAL D (the significance of the title remains a mystery throughout) follows a teenage delivery boy, Tak, who unwittlingly becomes the best drift racer in his region. Tak works during the day as a gas station attendant, and every night he must make a delivery high in the mountains for his father's tofu shop. One night, a triumphant encounter with the local racing hero makes Tak a star, and he finds himself drawn into the world of touge racing, which takes place among the dangerous mountain passes. Tak's father, Bunta, is a former racing champion himself, and he undertakes to train his son, offering wisdom between puffs of the cigarettes he constantly chain-smokes. Joining the local Akina Speed Stars and pursuing a relationship with Natalie Mogi--whose worldiness surpasses that of the average high schooler--Tak has adventures and engages in races with challengers who come from all over Japan. The series is drawn in both 2-D and 3-D, and features an engaging Eurobeat soundtrack, while the characters are well-drawn and complex. Novices to street racing should not be deterred, as the technical side of things is very clearly explained in an interesting way. This episode features a battle between the 86's, the Toyota Trueno AE 86, withTak driving the car he inherited from Bunta. His challenger is Wataru, and neither driver will quit before exhaustion sets in.
