About this product

Product Information

Accomplished British actor Sir Ian McKellen stars in this Canadian picture as Emile, a 65 year-old man torn apart by memories of his troubled past. Consumed by guilt over abandoning his family when he was young, Emile makes a last attempt to reconnect with his only living relatives. Director Carl Bessai seamlessly blends the past and present in retelling Emile's life story. Much of the film's key events are examined through flashbacks, with the real and imaginary intersecting throughout. Emile's fragile state of mind is reflected through this interweaving of the past and present, suggesting that he may never escape the past enough to really be present in the current moment. Exploring the conflict between wanting to be independent from one's family, and feeling the need to be connected, EMILE is a well-written and extraordinarily well-acted drama that deals with the complexities of human emotions.

  • Sir Ian McKellen is Emile in a Canadian Drama

Sir Ian McKellen is the undoubtedly steals the show as the title character, Emile. In this Canadian drama, Emile's a 65yo troubled with remorseful memories & many regrets. He's nearly over-the-edge with guilt for leaving his natal family when he was a much younger man. However, he did so in order to persue his academic career goals. It's Emile's guilt that compels him to make an older man's attempt to exonerate himself by reuniting with his distant living relatives. The story about Emile is portrayed in this film through his flashbacks (like McKellen did in "Gods and Monsters"). Like in McKellen's lead role of James Whale in "God's and Monster's," an older man weakened by a "touch of stroke," & a "storm going on in his brain," which rendered him in frequent states of mental fragility, ...
