Homer, Marge, Bart, and Lisa are the last hope for Springfield in The Simpsons Game for PlayStation 2. Featuring cartoon-like, cel-shaded graphics and 3D environments, The Simpsons Game offers players a chance to control each member of the flawed family (even baby Maggie) in a series of 16 "episodes" spread across four acts. Each episode parodies films, television shows, and particularly video games, with the latter skewering such mainstays as Grand Theft Auto, EverQuest, and the publisher's own Medal of Honor series. Two playable family members are featured in an episode, with solo gamers able to freely switch between the pre-selected pair to take advantage of a character's special attributes. Cooperative play with a friend is also supported throughout the animated adventure, which mixes elements of platform hopping, projectile firing, and puzzle solving.<br><br>Homer's abilities befit his slovenly persona: a belch of acrid gas and the power to transform into a blob to bounce or bowl over enemies. Bart fires a slingshot and transforms into Bartman, while Marge barks orders into a bullhorn and dons a policeman's cap for added strength. Lisa, on the other hand, disarms enemies with her sax and calls on the "hand of Buddha" to unleash various attacks. Each character can also activate special moves by filling up an energy meter or by finding power-ups. Character-specific collectibles are available as well, such as Duff bottle caps or Krusty coupons, which unlock one of two trophies per level. Players can even discover multiple video game clichés, from double jumps to invisible walls, each narrated with particular disdain by Comic Book Guy. The Simpsons Game features a storyline crafted by the show's Emmy-winning writers and dialogue voiced by the original cast members.

Relatively fun, must have for Simpsons fans
This game isn't an amazing game, but with that said it isn't horrible either. It's no Hit n' Run but with that said it still holds it's own ground and has interesting level design parodied off of other classic games of the time. One thing that I do enjoy about this more than the last title on the ps2 "Hit n Run" Is that you get to walk-through the entire Simpsons house and it's animated very nicely, something we couldn't really experience in Hit n Run. As stated in the title if your a big fan of The Simpsons than I recommend getting this game.This game isn't an amazing game, but with that said it isn't horrible either. Dooh!! Those damn camera angles [is what the tech debuggers should be saying]. As I love platform 3D games and the subtle and sometimes not so subtle irreverent humor of the Simpson's, I figured I couldn't go wrong with this purchase (especially at $5 for PS2 console platform; newegg has it for PS3 console at $12 with free shipping, which looks a little better in the graphics dept,- appearing to have more solid edges and textures to objects). When I said I figured I couldn't go wrong, I figured wrong. To explain; from the start of play, the control is terrible, due to camera angle viewpoints control often not being able to correctly adjust, causing players to have to repeat what should have been a simple series of jumps,- over and over and over..... and over,.. did I ... Inexcusable failure to properly debug this problem before release to publication makes what should be lighthearted casual fun to be a frustrating experience that persists throughout gameplay. The options allow user changes of horizontal and vertical camera viewpoint control to be inverted (either one or both), which is helpful for most 3D platform games; however, due to the camera viewpoint control failing to allow players to correctly adjust view while making a series of jumps that any gamer with moderate skills should be ableto pull off on the first attempt,.. letalone the 5th,- it is difficult to enjoy the humor when you are getting pissed off! This game has enough creative variety and humor to be fun, but the buggy problems that plague it throughout are not amusing,- so instead of 4-4.5 for its unique genre, it ends up getting a hard to award 3.5, and that is being generous. (Actually had to score either 3 or 4, usig eBay rating system, no half points).

Perhaps 4.6... this is game is great if you just like having fun exploring the simpson's non-violent universe without teeth gnashing puzzles to deal with. The game is simple because it is clearly made for fun, not countless hours of repetitive and often violent scenarios as is the case with most games. It's easy to get through, the graphics are spectacular on the playstation 2 due primarily to the simple colors and shapes of the cartoon world and you will enjoy playing this with family members. I highly recommend this one. The only pet peeve i really have with it is while always enjoyable to play, I thought they could have added a few more story cut scenes to make the gameplay a little bit more atmospheric. The cutscenes in this game are ... i would have given this 4 stars but it's too low. I thought the explanations of the game's "video game cliches" were quite clever, which is an actual game feature you unlock after doing certain actions a certain amount of times where the game will pause and tell you about all the different GTA and FPS game clihes that exist within the simpsons levels, but at times the cut scenes will have dialogue also explaining some of them. It's apparent the writers of the show had a lot to do with the development of the storyline and character dialogues. So do go out and buy it, it's great if you like a game that is all about care-free exploration and fun.
