Reviews
Washam, cofounder of Oakland, Calif.'s East Bay Meditation Center, blends personal stories with Buddhist wisdom and a range of other traditions (particularly shamanism) in this forceful invitation to personal transformation. "Cultivating a fierce heartis about learning to embrace it all, even the most painful aspects of our lives," the author writes, and chapters explore such aspects of the spiritual path as leaving the prison of the mind, accepting impermanence, and learning forgiveness. Throughout, Washam shares her struggles to find inner peace and feel compassion for others. Her personal difficulties included growing up biracial in a troubled family, leaving home at age 15, and suffering and witnessing violence before discovering Buddhist meditation. Washam brings energy and passion to the often-staid genre of writing by contemporary American Buddhist teachers. Given the intensity of Washam's sometimes-extreme spiritual experiences (she often goes on solitary retreats, which she recommends), a few guidelines about when to seek help from expert teachers or mental health professionals would have been helpful for readers. Despite this, Washam brings considerable gifts for conveying her vision of personal change and offers vivid, inspiring testimony to the power of Buddhism (and other wisdom traditions) to help heal suffering. (Nov.) - Publishers Weekly (starred review) " A Fierce Heart is a book whose time is an eternal now: sacred help, made beautifully accessible, by the wild and determined spirit of a no-nonsense female teacher, a bodhisattva, brown as Earth, real as Oxygen." - Alice Walker , author of The Color Purple

Anyone who has suffered will benefit from the life-saving teachings of this charismatic teacher. Her humor, enthusiasm, and energy are a balm., The journey Spring Washam has traveled in her life is long and difficult. Her father was a largely absent, cocaine addicted ex-con with whom she only connected as an adult. Her single mother worked hard but depended on state aid and food stamps to get by. In 1997 she hit an emotional rock bottom. She was living in a rough neighborhood with a man who was making her miserable. She was in debt, working an exploitative telesales job that didn't pay enough. She was deeply depressed, angry, stuck, and overwhelmed by life. One day, she snapped. She quit her job, broke up with her boyfriend, and moved on. In  A Fierce Heart,  Spring Washam shares her absolutely contemporary, streetwise interpretation of the Buddha's 2,500-year-old teachings. As Spring began to save her life, she discovered a deep connection with the dharma and has become a well-respected and beloved meditation teacher. Washam's teachings focus on social action, diversity, and youth, making the dharma welcoming to as wide a community as possible. Her interpretations and enthusiasm are electrifying. Anyone who has suffered benefits from the life-saving teachings of this charismatic teacher.
