Im Jahr 70 n. Chr. wurde Jerusalem bei der Niederschlagung des Judischen Aufstands von den Romern zerstort. Die Grundung der romischen Kolonie Aelia Capitolina an ihrer Stelle loste den Bar Kochba-Aufstand (132-136) aus, dessen Rom nur muhsam Herr werden konnte. Neben diesen Ereignissen legt der blutige Aufstand der judischen Diaspora (116-117) nahe, dass das Verhaltnis zwischen Romern und Juden in diesen Jahren aussergewohnlich schlecht war. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die romische Politik gegenuber den Juden in diesem Zeitraum umfassend anhand der disparaten Quellen, aus denen bis heute sich widersprechende Hypothesen zur Erklarung der krisenhaften Entwicklung gebildet werden. Den Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung stellt der romische Burgerkrieg im sogenannten Vierkaiserjahr 69 n. Chr. dar, in dem Vespasian die Herrschaft erringen und eine neue - die flavische - Dynastie begrunden konnte. Den Sieg uber die Juden ruckte er aus legitimatorischen Grunden in den Mittelpunkt seiner Aussendarstellung, um seinen gewaltsamen Griff nach der Macht in der offentlichen Wahrnehmung zu uberdecken. Judaa, das als Zentrum und Heimat der Juden bisher weitgehende religiose Autonomie genossen hatte, wurde nun immer mehr wie die ubrigen Provinzen des Romischen Reiches behandelt. Bei konservativen Juden stiess diese Entwicklung, die aus romischer Sicht in der Regel verwaltungspolitischen Notwendigkeiten folgte, ohne bewusst antijudisch zu sein, zunehmend auf Widerstand.
