Great D. W. Griffith Box Set / Masterworks
If you're into film history or have a love for quality, silent films, this is the box set for you. D. W. Griffith Masterworks was issued by Kino Films in 2002. Included in this seven dvd set is the controversial "Birth Of A Nation" (with Civil War short films as a bonus feature), "Intolerance", "Blossom" (with Lillian Gish), "Orphans Of The Storm" (also with Lillian Gish, her last film with D. W. Griffith) and a two disc set of Griffith's Biograph shorts. Unlike other director's of the time (1908-1922), Griffith knew how to transfer a really good story to film. Most of his works were considered "morality films", but he sure gave us a good illustration of what life was like in the early 20th Century. Without going ... Without going into a lot of detail, Griffith showed racism, drug addiction, criminality, prostitution and many other human pitfalls before a censorship board could be created. Actually, a lot of cities created censor boards when "Birth Of A Nation" was was first distributed in large, urban areas. Basically, Griffith showed life as real as he could get it. This is where he differed from other directors of the time. Most films were sixteen minute one reel, syrupy plot lines of romance or comedy. Griffith showed us a different perspective. He showed us how hard life was, but entertained us at the same time. I heartily recommend this set and would recommend it to anybody that has an interest in true film art.
