About this product

Product Information

When a kindly and miraculous old gentleman comes to a small town in Maine he seems too good to be true. Could it be... Satan? Interesting parallel to Mark Twain's "Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg." Based on a story by Stephen King.

Another excellent movie based on a Stephen King novel

This is a wonderful presentation of an excellent Stephen King book. The cast is wonderful. Max Von Sydow is fantastic in his role as the owner of the ‘Needful Things’ shop. Altogether a truly enjoyable movie.

  • Explores the nature of temptation

NEEDFUL THINGS made me see the nature of evil, Satan, & temptation in a way that eight years of Catholic school didn't. Pay close attention to the film...Leland Gaunt (the Satan figure) does not come to town and do terrible things to good people; nor does he force good people to commit atrocious acts. He uses people's greed as a tool to tempt them to do bad things that, deep down, they want to do anyway. Sheriff Pangborn is immune to Gaunt's influence, not because Pangborn has magic powers, but because deep down Pangborn cares for the town and its people. He does not want to commit vandalism, get revenge, or kill anyone. Gaunt therefore cannot tempt Pangborn; Gaunt can only tempt people who are already sinning in their souls. In a way, Gaunt merely exposes their ...

  • Everyone who enjoys Stephen King needs ‘Needful Things’ !

The book was great and the movie version outstanding. All the actor choices were absolutely brilliant for each of the characters.

  • One of Stephen King's best.

I would venture to say that this movie is better than the book or at least a close call. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It's one of those that you go back to periodically when you need a King fix.

  • Great, underrated script & performances

Great actors & script. Premise is an interesting twist on the deadly sins “thou shalt not covet...” by giving things the power to covet rather being merely the passive objects of desire. The result is the inevitable corruption of the individual and the destruction of the social fabric. If you liked Max Von Sydow as the Exorcist, wait til you see him as the Devil!
