La veille de l'ouragan Katrina, Ulysse est parti en mer et a promis à sa fille Pénélope de la retrouver dans le jardin qu'il a construit et baptisé en l'honneur du grand poète grec Homère: Le jardin de la Louisiane . Un an après, la police retrouve le bateau d'Ulysse et un rocher sur lesquelles deux lettres, U ( Ulysse ) et T( Troie ) , tracées à l'encre de Chine. Reconnaissant l'écriture de son père , Pénélope est persuadée qu'il lui a envoyé un message : « après la guerre de Troie, Ulysse erra d'île en île et mit des années avant de regagner sa terre d'Ithaque, donc il fallait attendre son retour ». Tant qu'on n'aura pas retrouvé son corps, Pénélope refuse d'accepter sa mort et se plonge dans le monde de l'Odyssée, imaginant son père traverser les îles où Ulysse s'est rendu. Plus elle observe les objets, les paysages et les gens qui l'entourent, plus elle s'enfonce dans des délires homériques. Les gens qui ne sont pas familiers des épopées de la guerre de Troie, pensent même qu'elle est obsédée d'Homer Simpson et du président Ulysse Grant. Pour sortir de ses délires homériques, monsieur Espoir l'invite à rencontrer les rescapés de l'ouragan Katrina qui vont l'aider à retrouver son Père. Comment Ulysse va-t-il retourner sur sa terre natale ? qui sont ces rescapés louisianais qui affrontent avec bravoure "l'après Katrina?"
