D'une rive a l'autre, les contes vehicules par la tradition orale temoignent de ces contacts et echanges qui, de tous temps, n'ont cesse de s'exercer. Les contes presentes ici ont ete recueillis a Alger de 1962 a 1966. a la maniere du conte, ils traitent, entre autres themes, du mariage: choix du conjoint, consequences de l'exogamie, refus de l'inceste, relations au sein de la famille. Mais l'apport crucial de ce petit corpus est aussi - fait rare dans les contes maghrebins - la presence de recits qui s'apparentent etroitement a la mythologie grecque. C'est ainsi, par exemple, que Le sultan qui ne voulait pas d'enfant se comporte exactement comme Cronos et que, a l'image d'Atalante, Hadjira succombera a la curiosite qu'eveille en elle la vue des pommes.Autre domaine en Mediterranee ou, d'est en ouest, les influences ont toujours ete fecondes: l'art du verre. La recitation des contes s'est souvent appuyee en Tunisie sur de petites peintures sur verre dont on trouvera ici quelques exemples. Elles s'inspirent de recits a caractere epique (portraits equestres de heros, combats singuliers), de croyances (le mauvais oeil); elle peuvent etre de veritables narrations en images (par ex. l'Arche de Noe en couverture). Elles refletent la diversite d'un art populaire d'une grande richesse.
