William Wellman's NIGHT NURSE is a sassy, unsentimental comedy about a private pediatric nurse named Lora Hart (Barbara Stanwyck) who, after applying as an apprentice in a family home, discovers there is a plot afoot to starve her two rich, fat, young charges to death. The culprit is the family's chauffeur, Nick (Clark Gable), a villain who plans to marry the kids' dissolute mother and make off with their trust fund. It's then up Hart, her wisecracking nurse friend Maloney (Joan Blondell), and her bootlegger beau Mortie (Ben Lyon) to save them. Lyon is both dashing and bumbling as Mortie, who hopes to help Lora, and Charlie Winninger is notable as Dr. Arthur Bell, the villainous head of the hospital. Director Wellman keeps the jokes humming along with the peril.

Night Nurse - Forbidden Hollywood
I'm a fan of classic film and recently discovered the fantastic Barbara Stanwyck. I saw "Nightnurse" advertised and decided to purchase it as I had never heard of the film and it was pre-code, which means it was made before Joseph Breen cut everything out of most films - not that they were risque by today's standards, but by the standards of the 1940s & 1950s, they were considered shocking. In addition to Stanwyck, Clark Gable made an appearance in this film as a corrupt bootlegger who is trying to starve two kids to death and keep their mother drunk so that he can collect the trust fund. He is in on the scheme with a corrupt doctor. Stanwyck is the "night nurse" who sees what's going on and, in true Stanwyck fashion, steps in and does the right thing without any regard for her own ... Classic movie from the 1930s.
I'm typing this with a smile on my face. The cast is great with Clark Gable, Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Blondell who all have well established film careers. The story line is good with some twists. A story of good over evil. A fair mix of comedy and seriousness. It is fun to compare how people lived then as to now; just how far we have come from the days of this picture. As for forbidden Hollywood you get to see how ladies dressed in the 30s (nothing bad. But I can't say more because it would give it all away. You have to watch it to pick up on the finer aspects of the acting and the way the actors preform their rolls. If you like these dated films you will like this one. It moves along pretty fast.
