Very easy transaction. Unfortunately, though, when the item arrived it didn't quite meet the criteria for "Very Good" condition, as stated in the listing. The outer box as well as every one of the cases and liners inside showed various levels of damage as shown in my pictures. The discs themselves appear to be fine and for $5 it's hard to complain, but I might have considered other listings for the item if I knew the actual condition.

Took 14 days to get here. When received it in tight packaging, was careful getting it out so wouldn't rip it but the cover was already ripped in a way I wouldn't have been able to rip it. Classic stalker thriller!
Cape Fear is the unnerving stalker thriller. J. Lee Thompson’s neo-noir psychological thriller Cape Fear (1962) is a genuinely scary thriller. Thompson takes Alfred Hitchcock’s haunting storyboards and Bernard Herrmann’s frightening score of piercing flutes with resonant horns and crafts his own neo-noir for the ages. Striking black and white cinematography makes Cape Fear’s aesthetic cool to look at, while eerie in atmosphere. Thompson’s slow pannings shots are equally as impressive as the fast tracking shots, giving his Cape Fear a fearsome fast pace. Thompson’s slick direction excels in neo-noir style and builds into a crescendo of violence. James R. Webb’s script is a flurry of legal jargon to justify an evil man’s crusade for revenge. Cape Fear is shockingly well made and holds up fantastically as a still nerve-racking thriller. Gregory Peck is his usual stalwart hero as a lawyer defending his family against a man he testified against years prior. Peck finds his acting home in realistic anxiety and worry for his family’s safety, which makes him a fine casting choice. His calm demeanor, handsome facial features, and serious expressions help the audience empathize with a man protecting his loved ones. Peck is highly sympathetic here and gives as good as he gets. I adore his finale lines to Mitchum where Peck gets to play his character sarcastically and vindictive to release all his pent up rage at this monstrous man. Robert Mitchum is horrifying as the tall, muscular fiend attempting to rape Peck’s wife and child in revenge. Mitchum travelled these acting roads before as he preyed upon Shelley Winters’ family in Charles Laughton’s The Night of the Hunter, but in Cape Fear he goes for a more forward approach. Mitchum saunters and jests his way into a smarmy and disgusting tour de force performance. He plays up his villain’s knowledge of the law, penchant for the underaged, and sadism towards women to cinematic perfection. Mitchum’s hard facial features, stocky torso, and lanky waist make for an unusual foe indeed. Robert Mitchum was born this sleazy ne’er-do-well. Polly Bergen is wonderful as Peck’s wife. Her fear for her family and herself as visible and sympathetic. Bergen finds a center balance between a supporting wife and a woman desperate to protect her daughter. Her frightened scene confronting Mitchum is pretty crazy. Similarly, little Lori Martin is excellent in her fearful portrayal of Peck’s daughter. Her panicked screams for help as Mitchum creeps up towards her is disturbing to say the least. You can see Martin’s dread in her eyes. On the other hand, the steadfast aid of character actor Telly Savalas is a great boon to Cape Fear. His hard-edged private detective is a neat supporting character to bounce ideas off of Peck for how best to protect his family from Mitchum. Savalas gives a phenomenal little monologue to the devastating Barrie Chase as a woman raped by Mitchum’s antagonist. Savalas ensures to explain to the audience how it would be better for her to put this woman beating rapist behind bars just as Chase demonstrates the unfortunately relevant reasoning behind women who stay quiet and don’t testify against abusive men. It’s a haunting scene in the middle of a nightmare thriller already. Lastly, Martin Balsam is helpful and likable as the chief of police trying his best to apprehend Mitchum’s stalker evading the law by way of legal loopholes. Likewise, Jack Kruschen is hilarious as the shyster lawyer defending Mitchum’s criminal on the loose. Kruschen does a fantastic job of making you despise him immediately as he rants how the police are harassing his client through legal jargon. They both deliver convincing supporting actor roles in a stacked cast for the classic Cape Fear. In short, J. Lee Thompson’s Cape Fear is a remarkably formidable thriller of professional craft, finely tuned acting, legendary composing, and biting writing. The original even surpasses the master Martin Scorsese’s terrifying remake with Robert De Niro if that’s possible!
