About this product

Product Information

An account of Nathan Milstein's career and that of his artistic contemporaries, but also of his cultural and political experience of Europe and America during the 20th century. He claims he drifted into defection during a musical tour abroad with friend and fellow musician, Vladimir Horowitz. Horrified by the brutal events he witnessed in Petersburg and Odessa during the Revolution and mistrustful of the developing situation, he simply never went back. His anecdotes include the conductors, composers and artists of recent history. In insisting that politics are inseparable from art he gives personal views on the effect of the Soviet regime on Prokoviev, the involvment of Furtwangler and von Karajan with Nazi Germany, and on Mussolini's patronage of avant-garde artists and musicians. Solomon Volkov is also the editor of Testimony , the memoirs of Dimitri Shostakovich.

We're so glad you love it! We'd listed it for auction six or seven times, gradually reducing the price down from the original £59, so you definitely got a bargain - and we're happy it finally found a home with someone who appreciates it because we thought it was beautiful too! Thanks for supporting the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity :-)
