About this product

Product Information

New York Times Bestseller and winner of the Carnegie Medal "Masterfully crafted" -- The Wall Street Journal For readers of Between Shades of Gray and All the Light We Cannot See , Ruta Sepetys returns to WWII in this epic novel that shines a light on one of the war's most devastating--yet unknown--tragedies. World War II is drawing to a close in East Prussia and thousands of refugees are on a desperate trek toward freedom, many with something to hide. Among them are Joana, Emilia, and Florian, whose paths converge en route to the ship that promises salvation, the Wilhelm Gustloff. Forced by circumstance to unite, the three find their strength, courage, and trust in each other tested with each step closer to safety. Just when it seems freedom is within their grasp, tragedy strikes. Not country, nor culture, nor status matter as all ten thousand people--adults and children alike--aboard must fight for the same thing: survival. Told in alternating points of view and perfect for fans of Anthony Doerr's Pulitzer Prize-winning All the Light We Cannot See , Erik Larson's Dead Wake , and Elizabeth Wein's Printz Honor Book Code Name Verity , this masterful work of historical fiction is inspired by the real-life tragedy that was the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff -- the greatest maritime disaster in history. As she did in Between Shades of Gray , Ruta Sepetys unearths a shockingly little-known casualty of a gruesome war, and proves that humanity and love can prevail, even in the darkest of hours. Praise for  Salt to the Sea : "Ruta Sepetys is a master of historical fiction. In Salt to the Sea the hard truths of her herculean research are tempered with effortless, intimate storytelling, as her warm and human characters breathe new life into one of the world's most terrible and neglected tragedies." -- Elizabeth Wein, New York Times bestselling author of Printz Award Honor Book Code Name Verity "Brutal. Beautiful. Honest." -- Sabaa Tahir, New York Times bestselling author of An Ember in the Ashes   "The inevitability of the ending (including the loss of several characters) doesn't change its poignancy, and the short chapters and slowly revealed back stories for each character guarantee the pages keep turning. Heartbreaking, historical, and a little bit hopeful." -- Kirkus, Advance praise for  Salt to the Sea : "Ruta Sepetys is a master of historical fiction. • Only mentioned once in book. Sorta strange title.

Easy to read because it is probably YA level, but it was quite compelling. At first I though “oh great, another WWII book”. But I totally enjoyed it and felt I was learning to empathize with those who suffered thru this horrible time I the Eastern European countries.

  • Beautifully written, hauntingly sad

This book deserves five stars and more. It is masterfully written and conveys the horrors of war and a tragic shipwreck in a way few works of fiction can. It belongs in the same class as THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE and JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN, in that reading it is not a pleasant experience. The deaths of beloved characters will haunt you. Some war stories leave the reader inspired by the triumph of the human spirit. This is not one of them. It's grim, filled with physical and emotional suffering. If you think war is exciting or glorious, this book will change your mind. It also sheds some light on the nearly-forgotten real-life sinking of the WILHELM GUSTLOFF.

  • Compelling Reading

It is an extremely well written story about a largely unknown WW 2 event. It expresses the horror of war as seen by people of different origins so eloquently.
