About this product

Product Information

An economic boom is sweeping through 1870s Europe. Still, Melmotte (David Suchet) is being forced to leave Vienna due to yet another financial scandal in this scoundrel's long list of fiduciary disasters. Melmotte decides to stay, though, and stirs up trouble with people who despise all about him except his bankroll. Suchet is devilishly delightful in this adaptation of Anthony Trollope's classic novel. This mini-series of corruption and deceit was adapted by Andrew Davies, who previously adapted PRIDE AND PREJUDICE for the A&E Network. Broadcast during a worldwide financial down slide, Trollope's cautionary tale of counting chickens before they hatch resonated strongly during its British broadcast.

  • Good, not great, period drama.

Not a top--of-the-list period favorite, but definitely worth having and watching a couple of times. Great acting, costumes, choreography, and story-line, but it has quite a lot less "virtue" than many of our favorite British productions. The funniest scene (and there are several humorous scenes) of all was when the Marie Melmotte (Shirley Henderson) was searching her father's office for blank checks, and sat in his chair imitating him...we just howled! She has such a "Minnie mouse" voice, and to hear her trying to mimic his gruff gravelly voice and scowling as he scowls...oh, you just have to see it!

  • An Intricate tale.

I became a fan of David Suchet from this viewing this movie from the first. I enjoy British intricate storytelling. Each character's story connects with the other. Some end well, some don't.(like real life itself). The title had to do with the changing of the times. Suchet's character was a foreigner weaving himself into British Society. The Railroad ( a new form of transportation), being introduced. The past was changing. You'd have to pay close attended to connect the title with the story. The main character connects the title in a statement. This is a true drama and it stands well with the quality of the British ability to tell a real tale with room for the viewer to gather their own conclusions about each character. I liked the whole story, nothing for me to dislike at all. That's why ...

  • Excellent period piece totally enjoyed the way we live now.

This was a very good movie worth watching several times. The way we live now was entertaining.
