Birth of a Nation - A Love/Hate Relationship With a Film.
The Birth of a Nation is what has been called the first true blockbuster hit of American Cinema. This film is a land mark for showing what could be done with a film outside of the usual fair that film (and what silent film is parodied for to this day). It showed how you can make more than an actor being a rigid persona and took action out to the battle fields. Truly, film would not have progressed forward in the scope of story telling had it not been for this film. With that said, the film takes a vicious, and I mean vicious racist portrayal of African Americans. The whole second half of the film is a revisionist re-writing the reconstruction period and the positive portrayal of the KKK as the savior of the south and the United States. The Blu-Ray is the 2011 restoration with a different score from the 1992/93 restoration. The Blu-Ray is taken from an archival print and has more tint over the 92 edition which just had really dark red tint in a few scenes. I bought this product because I have a love/hate relationship with this film. I hate it for it's racist message yet I can't help but admire what it did, i.e., not all films have to be boring, but the urge to sing it's "artistic praises" so to speak as some critics have called it is quickly over shadowed by it's harsh portrayal of blacks, who 80 to 90% are people in black face. But then to know that DW Griffith would go on to inspire other film directors like Abel Gance (1927's Napoleon) just goes to show at how influential the film in the terms of story arc (not necessarily content) can be. Do I suggest this film, I emphatically on two levels, if you are studying film and how it grew to what it is today, this is a must watch for that alone. The other reason to watch is because one must see what hatred is passed as truth to keep a stranglehold on a group down, if just to get a glimpse as to how a racist mind thinks. Like I said above, Blu-Ray has the 2011 edition along with the spoken intro dialogue from the 1930 re-release and the recently found opening speaking segment for the opening of the 2nd half of the film. The two remaining discs are the same as the Kino DVD release of the 92/93 edition with the bonus disc. Keep in mind, that there is still a lot of scratches on film on the Blu-Ray edition, as the DVD, but some of the bad splices are not there as on the DVD version. I don't know if any of this helped you make a choice on whether to purchase and/or watch the film but that is my two cents.

Best version available to date.
This film proved hard to come by, all of a sudden. I suspect that copies of it are not as prolific as some months before due to increased sensitivity regarding racial issues. I bought the film for its restoration, not its content - this is the best resto available, especially considering that the predominance derives from the original 1915 negative.

Those who deny the evils of history always, always!, repeat them… The movie is good. Well made. The scenes are clear. Reconstruction WAS bad. If President Lincoln lived would things have been better? Yes, I believed our Nation would have repaired itself. Would the kkk have evolved? Don’t let the ignorant intolerant (check out DWG’s Intolerant (1916)) keep you from checking out this movie.
