About this product

Product Information

Flashing a mouthful of fake gold teeth, Julien (Ewen Bremner) wanders the streets of New York City, mumbling nonsensical syllables to himself. He tries to avoid the abuse of his sadistic drunken gas-mask-wearing father (German director Werner Herzog). He cracks a young boy's head open with a rock. He befriends a blind figure skater. He wears a bra and underwear as he wrestles with his younger brother. And his sister, Pearl (Chloë Sevigny), is pregnant--with Julien's child. Writer-director Harmony Korine succeeds remarkably well in showing the world through Julien's eyes: a schizophrenic kaleidoscope of images--some hauntingly beautiful, some disturbing and violent. The first American film made in accordance with the Danish filmmaking manifesto Dogma 95 (which also includes THE CELEBRATION and MIFUNE), JULIEN DONKEY-BOY uses no cinematic tricks such as artificial lighting or studio sound. Shot on handheld digital video, the film was transferred to 16mm stock before being blown up to 35mm film for the final print. Korine used this unique method to give the film the low-definition, degraded look of an old Super-8 home movie. Pushing the envelope further, Korine rejects classic narrative storytelling in favor of a more poetic succession of scenes. The result is a gritty, surreal collage that powerfully and touchingly evokes the schizophrenic experience as few films have.

There are few sellers that can make you feel like you've just been welcomed into a home and offered a soft chair in front of a fireplace...over text exchanges. That's how friendly this seller is! Quality products, prompt shipping, reasonable negotiators, great packaging, products as advertised...I could not ask for a better seller! Have done business with them in the past and, should the right product end up on their page, will happily do business in the future! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

  • Interesting for Korine fans, hardly for everyone.

Being a fan of Harmony Korine's work as a director (the writing he did for Larry Clark's movies is something I'd rather disregard), this review is bound to be a bit biased. Korine has been critisized for doing overly 'arty' stuff for the sake of being weird, and in the case of Trash Humpers for exemple, I think that is partly true - that one is better viewed as a piece of video art than a feature film. And that is probably a good starting point when approaching this film too; see it rather as a piece of art than a 'popcorn flick'. Julien Donkey-boy sits somewhere inbetween Gummo and Trash Humpers aesthetically - it subscibes to the Dogme 95 manifesto, using natural light and being shot on 8 mm film later blown up to a larger format, which gives the film a very coarse look. The narrative ...

  • I love Julien Donkey-Boy!!! BEST MOVIE EVER!!!

If you are a fan of Harmony Korine, and have never seen this movie...or if you are simply a fan of really "out-there" movies that realy push the limits of what is morally right, then you will love this movie!!! I bought this because I only own the VHS copy of this movie...I love it so much that I wanted to have another copy!!! That's how great this movie is... The movie follows a schizophreniac, Julien, around and views life through his eyes. If you're looking for a movie with a plot and a story, this will not be for you, as it's composed of basically a set of clips, that you have to put together and interpret in your own way. Many of my friends don't "get" Harmony Korrine's movies because they are too simple-minded...they fail to look at the big picture, only focusing on the clips. ...

  • a very morbid yet intriguing movie

i saw gummo and had to buy this. to me these movies go hand in hand, like peanut butter and jelly. you cant have one without the other. its about a schizophrenic dealing with life in todays society. i was once again mesmerized by the imagery in harmony's movie. it has a gritty "real" feel to it. it had me laughing at points and feeling sad for the guy at others. i think what harmony does is leave certain things open ended and up for interpretation so the viewer can draw their own conclusions, which is something i love because a movie that doesnt make you think is a waste of time. scenes from this movie will haunt you forever.[fyi i purposely left out any real spoilers]

  • Julien Donkey-Boy

The first time I watched this movie my friend asked me to turn it off. Harmony Korine's work isn't for everybody but I personally love his stuff. Ewen Bremner does a fantastic job playing the schizophrenic title character with great support from Chloe Sevigny and Werner Herzog, playing his sister and father respectively. A delightful mix or actors and real people going through the motions of their lives. This is a film that won't be soon forgotten.
