About this product

Product Information

By P.L. Travers, the author featured in the movie Saving Mr. Banks . From the moment Mary Poppins arrives at Number Seventeen Cherry-Tree Lane, everyday life at the Banks house is forever changed. It all starts when Mary Poppins is blown by the east wind onto the doorstep of the Banks house. She becomes a most unusual nanny to Jane, Michael, and the twins. Who else but Mary Poppins can slide up banisters, pull an entire armchair out of an empty carpetbag, and make a dose of medicine taste like delicious lime-juice cordial? A day with Mary Poppins is a day of magic and make-believe come to life

Reviews
Life was never the same again for the Banks family after the astonishing Mary Poppins blew in with the east wind. This revised edition introduces some delightful new characters. Delightful nonsense that defies an age boundary of appreciation., "When Mary Poppins is about, her young charges can never tell where the real world merges into make-believe. Neither can the reader, and that is one of the hallmarks of good fantasy."-- The New York Times

  • Mary Poppins P. L. Travers

Simply written in easily broken sections for bed time story telling, some terms dated but if chronological context is simply explained it adds charm to the story. Some characterizations are obviously not related to fact, eg a possible Australian character has been Americanized and stereotyped but if viewed in the context of social norms of the time the story was written, this can be excused and adjusted in the telling if needed. No Australian Aboriginal would ever speak with those words. Of course the character may have been meant to be from somewhere else. The story is much less sugary than the Disney version yet holds ones interest and engages the imagination. Love the section of the protesting dog. Looking forward to re reading the complete series.

  • Not the right cover

I don't typically judge books by their cover.... But I picked this particular version of "Mary Poppins" because of its advertised colorful cover... I work with young kids whose initial impressions of books are based off of the cover... I was given a different cover, not nearly as bright and colorful, as the one advertised. I guess I'm going to have to print a copy of this cover myself.
