About this product

Product Information

On New Year's Eve 1972, following eighteen magnificent seasons in the major leagues, Roberto Clemente died a hero's death, killed in a plane crash as he attempted to deliver food and medical supplies to Nicaragua after a devastating earthquake. David Maraniss now brings the great baseball player brilliantly back to life in Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero. Maraniss offers thrilling accounts of Clemente's underdog Pirates' two World Series victories, but Clemente is for more than just another baseball book. Roberto Clemente was a work of art in a game too often defined by statistics. He was also that rare athlete who rose above sports to become a symbol of larger themes, the Jackie Robinson of the Spanish-speaking world, who paved the way for waves of Latino players who followed in later generations. The Clemente that Maraniss evokes was a ballplayer of determination, grace, and dignity who insisted that his responsibilities extended beyond the playing field. With narrative sweep and meticulous detail, Clemente captures the myth and the real man, and retraces his final days, using newly uncovered documents to reveal the corruption and negligence that led the unwitting hero on a mission of mercy toward his untimely death.

Very easy transaction. Unfortunately, though, when the item arrived it didn't quite meet the criteria for "Very Good" condition, as stated in the listing. The outer box as well as every one of the cases and liners inside showed various levels of damage as shown in my pictures. The discs themselves appear to be fine and for $5 it's hard to complain, but I might have considered other listings for the item if I knew the actual condition.

Took 14 days to get here. When received it in tight packaging, was careful getting it out so wouldn't rip it but the cover was already ripped in a way I wouldn't have been able to rip it. But overall, book is in great shape, just weird it took so long to get here. No seller communication...I have not reached out, book was at a fair price.

This book , "Clemente" about the life of the Great Pittsburgh Pirates star Roberto Clemente is an outstanding audio book to listen , very well researched and very interesting to listen to , i highly recommend this book to all baseball fans and even non-baseball fans , its important not to forget this brave , unselfish man , who died trying to get aid and supplies to earthquake stricken central america

  • Book on CDs about Roberto Clemente

The book cds are about my lifelong hero, Roberto Clemente. Clemente, a baseball superstar, made the ultimate sacrifice in an attempt to assist victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua during Christmas 1972. I consider this item a collector's item and, although I also have the book, was glad these were made available on eBay.

  • Baseball Been Very Very Good to Me

What a boring biography. I was really looking forward to learning more about this mythic baseball figure from my early childhood years. However, all I got out of it was that Clemente loved Puerto Rico very very much.
