About this product

Product Information

The Cambridge Double Star Atlas is back! It is the first and only atlas of physical double stars that can be viewed with amateur astronomical instruments. Completely rewritten, this new edition explains the latest research into double stars, and looks at the equipment, techniques and opportunities that will enable you to discover, observe and measure them. The target list has been completely revised and extended to 2500 binary or multiple systems. Each system is described with the most recent and accurate data from the authoritative Washington Double Star Catalog, including the HD and SAO numbers that are most useful in our digital age. Hundreds of remarks explain the attributes of local, rapidly changing, often measured or known orbital systems. The color atlas charts by Wil Tirion have been updated to help you easily find and identify the target systems, as well as other deep-sky objects. This is an essential reference for double star observers.

"This comprehensive update of a popular star atlas amongst the double star community is to be welcomed. The catalogue has also been extensively and logically revised with more accessibility for the amateur telescope as the guiding theme." R. W. Item as described, good price, well packaged, arrived slightly later than hoped (not in time for Christmas ) but the order was placed in a very busy shipping period. No issue with the seller’s speed of response and sending the item. Great seller!

Great seller with great communication! Item arrived complete, as described and for a good price. There was a bit of an issue with tracking the order at one point (not the seller's fault), but seller was proactive in reaching out to the carrier and myself to get everything back on track. Arrived when expected.

  • A great atlas for more than just double stars!

The star charts are significantly larger than in Cambridge's Star Atlas, and the maps show all the same DSOs. Some have complained that the new edition does not contain optical doubles. I am not sure why that would be a negative. I think most people study true doubles because people are looking for all the physical attributes that bind a multiple star system together. I am very glad this atlas contains only targets that are true double. Lastly, this atlas is a great companion to Cambridge's star atlas, and as always, Wil Tirion's charts are a delight.

  • Only includes physical doubles

They don't make this very plain in the details of this atlas but it only covers physical double stars. I was hoping for all the doubles, physical and optical. It is a good atlas but I was a bit disappointed when I learned in the intro that it contained only physical doubles as many optical doubles are wonderful to look at also.
