A must have for anyone with after world plans
I expected this to be a very action packed movie with climactic points and a very powerful driven story thought up by Hollywood. What i got was not what was up to my expectations in entertainment. But in another way, a VERY powerful tool. This movie is by far one of the darkest and horrific flicks that deal with the "end of society". We all think of plagues of zombies that can pile against skyscrapers, monkey viruses that kill humans, but make chimps talk. Even fantasy scenes of free loot 28 days after a rage induced viral outbreak. This movie is here to break that illusion. It is here to say, "YOU DON'T WANT WROL". This movie focuses on a man and his son trekking across the ruins of America 10 years after a thermonuclear war. There are not animals left. The vegetation has died off or been ... And all the while, the main characters are always in danger of being hunted and killed, as cannibalism has become the new "Norm" of society. There are no fancy camera shots, slo-motion, action music, or even a hope of civilization anywhere. It is all unraveled, destroyed, chaotic fear that makes Mad Max look like a weekend derby at the fair. This movie is not for entertainment purposes. It is the most realistic message that any producer can come up with without sparking nuclear war. Now i'm not saying it isn't worth it to pick up for $5. But once you watch it, the power that comes in the form of fear, is enough to keep preppers prepping, and those who think SHTF is going to be a free for all, come to reality to fear any sort of major disaster. DEFINITELY worth a watch. Even if you can't stand to watch it all.

The Road Leaves you Beleagered and Depressed
The simple message that was portrayed by director John Hillcoat's vision of Cormac McCarthy's novel was basically to never give up & keep the fire burning in your heart. After all, being one of the good guys is an honorable thing. Turning into an animal & cannibalizing one another to survive was not an option. Although we find a great deal of disintegration in the way of life because lack of food, we find story of hope, it is also one of hardship and sacrifice. The man sadly trudges down the road trying to keep himself and his young son alive. He lost his wife earlier to mental illness. The women in his dreams is his wife played by Charlize Theron. It's quite strange that Theron was never playing her role in the flesh, but only in the man's dreams. Mortensen embodies all the balances ... Mortensen embodies all the balances of empathy, compassion, and love against instinct, survival, and harshness. The man has no other choice at times. Not knowing what you would do in any of many of the life or death situations makes for an excellent dramatic picture of a post apocalyptic world. The most memorable quote of the film, in my opinion was when the man says, "I told the boy when you dream about bad things happening, it means you're still fighting and you're still alive. It's when you start to dream about good things that you should start to worry." I can not fail to mention Michael K. Williams as "The Thief". This man was so lost on his own journey of survival that he just couldn't help himself. You know that he is a man of honor and kindness that had no choice, but then you must think of the fact that he did, he could have allowed himself to die rather than take from innocence. But that's the rub, no one is innocent, not even "The Boy" as evidenced when Smit-McPhee yells at his father to say that he also must face what's going on each day. Viggo isn't shielding him from the terrors around every corner; just because he is youngster doesn't mean he hasn't had to grow up fast; it's all he could do to stay sane and move along with all the pains of his past and knowledge of those still to come. It is extremely painful to watch, but well worth the time and effort to see a true masterpiece of shifting tonality and humanity, the good parts and the bad. Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee (the boy) reported bonding by eating crickets to help them get into character. I also learned by watching the film credits that Mortensen also had played and recorded his own little piano rift called "Grey Eyes" for the film soundtrack. Mortensen nearly turned down the role of Man because he had planned a break from film work. After completing his work as the Man, Mortensen took a long break from acting. The scariest things in this film weren't the lack of food and shelter, but the fact that humans had turned to gangs to track down & cannibalize the remaining population. Garrett Dillahunt lends his acting skills once again to give us a spooky view into the eyes of one of the cannibal gang members trying to survive by taking the boy hostage. Of course, the man kills him with a bullet to the head. One of the cannibals on the back of the lorry is played by Kodi Smit-McPhee's real life father. Several small roles in this film helped flesh out the cast, yet had minimal effect to the overall film. Robert Duvall as the old man was played well. Guy Pierce appears in a small role at the end. Actually Kodi Smit-McPhee, who plays the young boy at 12, did a remarkable job holding this film together.

The Road - A good entertaining movie
Viggo Mortensen (Appaloosa) stars in this drama about a man and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who are trying to stay alive after the planet is devastated by an unknown cause. All life has been killed off, the tress, the animals and most other living things. Only a few people survived to face the suffering and torment that they must endure in their struggle to find food, water and shelter from the total devastation. Along "the Road" they meet many people, some good but most are bad. Mortensen must teach his son how to survive in this strange new world. This is a very good movie and Mortensen is very good in this. Charlize Theron plays his wife (she appears in flashbacks throughout the movie). Also starring in this movie are: Michael K. Williams, Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce It is a pretty ... Realistic, bleak, heart wrenching, awesome
I love these kind of post apocalyptic movies and heard this one is good. I was truly impressed by the acting and direction, which is rare. Even minor roles are played by big name actors, which really adds a lot to this movie. You don't have just one big name actor carrying the whole movie. Also, I have a young son and can realte to this father's determination to do anything to protect his son. However, be advised it is bleak and depressing. The father's obsession with that pistol and suicide was very sad and troubling but I assume very realistic as I would think most people would not want to continue to live after the end of the world. Most people in this move were reduced to animals just trying to meet their basic survival needs, such as food, water, warmth and shelter. Made me ... I love these kind of post apocalyptic movies and heard this one is good. I was truly impressed by the acting and direction, which is rare. Best movie of the year!
After an undisclosed apocalyptic event occurs. Bright light, aftershock, and fire, duh, nuclear war. Viggo Mortensen, his wife, Charlize Theron, and their son are hold up in their home trying to survive. She eventually gives up on life and wanders out into a frigid night never to be seen again. Viggo takes their son and heads south to the coast in search of warm weather. Along the way they encounter cannibals, thieves, and paranoid survivors. Its a great movie, the acting is top notch with Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce making cameo appearances. The young actor who plays the son also starred in 'Let Me In' a few years back and is ahead of his years in acting talent. But let's face it, this movie is all about Viggo Mortensen.
