Let the Music Speak for Itself
The works featured on this DVD are Concertoes that Artur Rubinstein performed throughout his life and career. They are the Saint Saens Concerto #2, the Chopin Concerto #2, and the Grieg Concerto in A minor. Rubinstein was 88 years old when these recordings were made. His photographic memory still intact, as well as impeccable musicianship, but the more difficult passages may tend to sound a bit labored.If you have heard the brilliant virtuosity of Collard or Pascal Roge on the Saint Saens Concertoes, or if you have heard Krystan Zimerman and Giulini play the Chopin second Concerto (Los Angeles Times critic Albert Goldberg said of this performance; "That is the way Josef Hofmann must have played when he was a young man") or if you have heard Richter play the Grieg, with the double ... Rubinstein never breaks a line and seldom bends a rythm. He uses little rubato and relatively little flucuation of tempo. His playing represents sentiment without sentimentality, brilliance without nonsensical virtuosity, logic without pedantry, tension without neurosis. He is dramatic without being affected or overemotive.His Chopin unfolds with suavity, poetry and aristocracy, and above all with ardor. He allows the music to speak for itself. The most important work on this concert may well be the Grieg Concerto. When Rubinstein was a young man, his fellow colleagues always spoke of the Grieg Concerto in a condescending manner. For many years he absolutely would not learn it. Then one day, his wife bought the music and left it on his piano. As he began going through the piece, he fell in love with it and learned it in 3 days. Shortly afterward, RCA made a 78 RPM recording of it with him as soloist and Eugene Ormandy conducting. After an advance copy of the discs had been mailed to Rubinstein, he then invited Rachmaninoff over for dinner. As the 2 men discussed this piece, Rachmaninoff said point blank; "The Grieg Concerto is the greatest Concerto ever written. No exceptions." Rubinstein then played the 78 RPM discs for the great Russian. After the performance, Rachmaninoff sat silent. Rubinstein said; "Well, what do you think?" Rachmaninoff replied; "Piano out of tune" And so began a quest by Rubinstein to make a perfect recording of this work. A few years later a recording with Wallenstein conducting. It was of this performance that Rubinstein said; "This is the most perfect recording I have ever made" Finally at age 88 with Andre Previn. Previn was at the peak of his powers when he conducted the London Sym. producing such collectors items as Prokofievs 5th Symphony, Ravels Daphne and Chloe and Orffs Carmina Burana although in this latter work it is the boys choir that leaves all the competition in the shade. Before Rubinstein gave a recital as he walked out onto the stage, he would always glance quickly at the audience, and single someone out. Then during the recital he would play to that one person. Here on this DVD, something metaphysical happens as Rubinstein plays the Grieg. Its as though the great man is playing this time, for Rachmaninoff, and saying "Here at last I am paired with a superb conductor, to give your favorite concerto, the performance of a lifetime

rubenstein was one of the great pianists of the 20th century - the music just rolls effortlessly off his fingers - if you like piano concertos, you won't be disappointed by this dvd
