The glorious early-20th century resort only operates in warm weather because the snowy roads deny access in the colder months, so Jack brings his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), with him, as well as his young son, Danny (Danny Lloyd), who possesses some unique psychic powers. As the Torrances settle in for the long, lonely months ahead, strange, unexplainable things start occurring in the hotel--and in every scene Jack seems to be growing a little more evil and dangerous....Cinematographer John Alcott (who also worked on BARRY LYNDON and A CLOCKWORK ORANGE) allows his Steadicam to float eerily through the deserted halls and corridors of the hotel, creating a creepy air of tension as Jack plummets into madness. Kubrick's obsessive eye for detail is prevalent throughout; the famous scene where Danny rides his toy buggy through the hotel is remarkable for Alcott's gliding camerawork and the desolate sound of the wheels alternately scraping across the hardwood and carpeted floors. Nicholson and Duvall are outstanding throughout, with both actors running the full gamut of human emotions as the film races towards a thrilling conclusion. Supplemented by an oddball cast of dead twin girls, suicidal ax-murdering ghosts, Scatman Crothers as the hotel cook, and many other weird and wonderful figures, Kubrick's film is a pulse-racing treat that is among the best in his inimitable body of work.

A Kubrick Classic
The Shining is Stanley Kubrick's vision of what he thinks the Stephen King novel should be. It stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall who are a married couple along with their son Danny who must caretake over a secluded summer resort in Colorado. The resort has had a violent past, with a former caretaker murdering his wife and two daughters before killing himself years earlier. Now Jack, Wendy (Duvall), and Danny must spend the next five months without any outside contact with the rest of the world. Cabin Fever slowly sets in, and the evil spirits of the hotel don't help Jack much either. Jack Nicholson does a marvelous job portraying this man who is hearing and seeing the former patrons and dwellers of the hotel, and is slowly heading towards insanity. When I first saw this movie, I didn't care for it much. That was mainly because the first time I had seen it, it was edited for TV. And there are several things that don't match the book, namely the ending. For a more true to the book version, I suggest Stephen King's The Shining, which is almost as good. After several years though, I bought the Kubrick version, and I was truly impressed. It was like I'd never seen the version that was edited. Plus I was much younger when I first seen it, and sometimes you think a movie is better than it is when you're younger (Friday The 13th Part whatever). But conversely, you don't appreciate some movies until you're older. A good case for me is this movie as well as Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. I thought they were both strange when I had first seen them, and now I love them both. They're good stories with different twists. What I especially like about this version of The Shining is the camera work. The opening shots of the mountains are absolutely breathtaking, as are the other aerial shots of the resort and the shots of the maze. And the shots of Jack coming into a room, especially when Shelley Duvall is behind the typewriter are chilling. But my favorite shot is when Jack is locked in the canned goods locker, with the shot from underneath him. It captures Jack at his menacing best. Also, the music definitely fits this movie perfectly. It keeps foreshadowing Jack's slow climb to lunacy. It's actually spine tingling at times. Although it's a little off from the book, it's definitely a great movie. I now prefer this version to Stephen King's version (although I like that one too, it's closer to his novel) because of the great acting, music, and camera work. It has stood the test of time, and Stanley Kubrick has made this movie his own. It is truly a horror classic. Anyone who likes horror movies must have this movie in their collection.

Very Weak Adaptation
Was not faithful to the novel at all. Way too much cut out and way too much altered including the ending. Acting was poor on that part of nearly all the actors, it was very scripted like they didn't bother to learn their line and just read off of cue cards. I was disappointed. This movie needs to be re-shot with input from King himself.

Cool title
I like the part when Danny runs into the little girls and they say "come play with us." I dislike the part when Jack yells at Wendy when they walk up the stairs in the area where he types. I love the part when Jack chases Danny in the maze. This is a very good horror movie!
