Good for mating with Sound Bars
My rating is based on use of this subwoofer with the Yamaha soundbar. As noted by others it will not rattle your house. However, it is a good performer for a small to medium-sized room. I am using my YST-FSW100 with a Yamaha YSP-3050 soundbar. The subwoofer is thin, tucks in next to the wall unit on which the soundbar is located, and it not as noticeable as the cube subwoofers. While the YST-FSW100 has a system connector jack and cable for connection to a Yamaha soundbar, the YSP 3050 does not have a system connector jack! The system connector cable is designed for automatically shutting off the subwoofer when you shut off the soundbar using its remote. So, with the 3050, you must manually turn the subwoofer off. Way to go Yamaha! Interstingly, the older cheaper Yamaha soundbars ... My rating is based on use of this subwoofer with the Yamaha soundbar. As noted by others it will not rattle your house. Anyway, I chose the YST-FSW100 over the newer, down-firing Yamaha subwoofers aolely because the power switch and other switches for these down-firing subs are on the back of the unit and are not as accessible as the top mounted switches on the YST-FSW100. Based on my personal experience, the performance of the soundbar and sub is quite nice. However, it does not match the surround sound attainable with a true 5.1 and up speaker arrangement.

Wonderful Compact Subwoofer
What this subwoofer is great for: If you are looking for compact subwoofer that you can hide in a corner, but still get great bass from to fill in the low end of your favorite movie's sound effects, this is it. The bass out of this subwoofer is tight and clean. It is perfect for a master bedroom, small media room, or even the living room. For the small outlay of cash for this sub, it’s a great buy. What this subwoofer isn't: If you are looking shake the whole house and peel the paint off the walls, this isn't it. It’s a compact subwoofer, not a 12 or 15 inch subwoofer. That’s not to say it can't produce a decent bass drum punch or a good rumble from that exploding scene from your favorite movie, because it definitely can. I just mean that if you are looking for a subwoofer to shake ... What this subwoofer is great for: If you are looking for compact subwoofer that you can hide in a corner, but still get great bass from to fill in the low end of your favorite movie's sound effects, this is it. In Conclusion: This is a wonderful compact subwoofer that puts out a great amount of bass without any distortion. It’s as nice as any Bose compact subwoofer that I have listened to, but at a fraction of the price.

excellent woofage
great small woofer for the $$. defined bass, fills up our 17 x 35 foot room nicely with a 5.1 in-wall system, onkyo receiver. have only tried music, not movies. caveats: I am a 40-something white male who doesn't bang my head against the wall. I probably would have gone a bit bigger but wanted room for it on a narrow shelf. Gets great reviews at CNET tho for being more than a boom boom box ...and they are right!
