    About this product

    Product Information

Based on the novella by Stephen King, director Bryan Singer's follow-up to THE USUAL SUSPECTS is a harrowing psychological thriller about the relationship that forms between a boy and the neighbor he discovers is a Nazi war criminal. After a brief lesson in history class, star pupil Todd Bowden (Brad Renfro) becomes obsessed with Hitler and his followers. Through extensive research, he discovers that the infamous Kurt Dussender (Sir Ian McKellen) has been hiding out, living a normal life in his own neighborhood. But instead of reporting Dussender to the authorities, Todd decides to use him to gain further knowledge...everything that the history books won't tell him. But who ends up using whom, and what happens when a susceptible young mind encounters true evil, leads to a surprising, taught, and unsettling suspense film.Interested in the novella since he was 19, Singer worked closely with screenwriter Brandon Boyce to bring this compelling story to the screen. Filled with the same touches that are hallmarks of his previous films--careful editing, use of small spaces to evoke tense atmospherics, terrific cinematography, and stellar acting--the film is a disturbing exploration into the seductively dark side of human nature.

An excellent film with a very impressive performance by Ian McKellan. this film is based on a short novel by Stephen King; which explores the fascination some people have with true evil. McKellan's character. Kurt Dussander is a Nazi war criminal who has assumed another identity. His interactio with the teenager who exposes his identity is a game of cat and mouse with the roles being reversed. A truly chilling character study.

      • Good not excellant

I thought it was alright. It was a bit slowly paced and the whole second act didn't seem to have a lot of direction. I also didn't really like the casting of Brad Renfro as Todd. I thought they could have found someone better for the role. Of course Ian McKellen was fantastic. He kept up his accent throughout the whole film which was impressive. The weird thing is that I didn't want the old guy to get caught. I was hoping he'd escape safely up until the very end of the film. The kid, however, I didn't really care about. Maybe because the kid is clearly a sociopath on his way to a very dastardly future, whereas the old man had done horrible things, but he was simply living out the end of his life not bothering anyone. Except maybe a cat or two.

      • Apt Pupil Movie Review

Apt Pupil is a novella written by Stephen King. It is a story about an escaped Nazi's warped relationship with a teenage boy. Brad Renfro and Ian McKellen give riveting performances. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. You will too.

      • The Holocaust is like Humanity's Car wreck. You don't want to look, but you can't help watching.

Subject matter is a bit dark. Characters relationships are well developed, and the plot has some twists to keep things moving along and the viewers interest as well.
