Essential Reading for Mountain Lion Enthusiasts
Onzas are something real, but WHAT is still the question. Several writers have tried to tackle this intriguing subject, and this one may be the most thorough and scientific to date. Generously illustrated, it includes summations of the work of previous researchers and shares the most up-to-date conclusions by true zoologists, and DNA findings, but still refrains from forcing personal opinions, which would be very tempting in such a controversy. There is still more to learn about the cats known as onzas, and perhaps this research will lead to definitive answers someday. I became interested because of my purchase of a photograph collection featuring the onza's earliest American observer, C. B. Ruggles, including some of his original photos used in Marshall's book titled Onza (1961). This ... Onzas are something real, but WHAT is still the question. I became interested because of my purchase of a photograph collection featuring the onza's earliest American observer, C. B. Ruggles, including some of his original photos used in Marshall's book titled Onza (1961). This is a fascinating animal, not your garden variety puma, and now that there have been several attacks by mountain lions in the United States, some fatal, the many legends of the onza in Mexico seem much less as absurd myths as previously assumed. This book helps clear the fog, where observant hunters in the past wrongly insisted that onzas/oncas were a different species. Genetics suggest (to me) that onzas are similar or even a throwback to perhaps late pre-historic mountain lions, who were built and marked a little differently, akin to the now extinct North American Cheetahs. This author ignores the possibility that onzas are a hybrid, 99% Mountain Lion, but (just my opinion) perhaps results of inadvertent crossbreeding with "ounces," trained hunting cheetahs used in Europe in ancient times, which could have very easily been brought in significant numbers by the Spanish noblemen, who introduced every other Spanish domestic animal to Mexico. If significant numbers of those ounces got loose, which is quite probable, they might have interbred with native Mexican mountain lions and thrown these animals, known for centuries as "Onzas," by the Mexicans, a rare and (over time) a much watered down version today.
