  • It's only a game? Far from it...

    I bought this when it first came out, but having lent my copy to a friend of a friend (never again!), it vanished into the ether, and so I picked up another copy. It was never in question that it needed to be replaced. All of Bank's books, whether with an 'M' or without, merit repeated reading. Over the nearly twenty years since this story first emerged, I must have read it half a dozen times or more, and remain constantly amazed at the depth of imagination, and the use of language. Banks is a consummate wordsmith, not in the Stephen Fry 'using a hundred words when three will do' but in his ability to change the tone and vocabulary of the piece in accordance with the character and scenario.
