TAILOR MADE HAYWARD AND AT HER BEST
These are both public domain (copyrights were not renewed and up for grabs) so the digital quality suffers from poor transfers. However, both movies starring the vibrant Susan Hayward are great. Hayward won her first Oscar nomination for playing the first female alcoholic to be depicted on film as a lead character in SMASH UP. Her performance is multi-layered and sympathetic as a neglected wife who becomes a bottle baby. TULSA places Hayward in her element, as a hellraiser oil queen during the Oklahoma boom. She plays Cherokee Lansing and if this part of a two=fisted, gusty broad wasn't for Hayward, then no one else could have tackled this role so perfectly. Both movies were made during the period when she under contract to independent producer Walter Wanger who not only made her a star ... I Want to Live
A gripping true life story of "Barbara Graham" and her battle to stay out of the gas chamber in order to raise her son. Susan Hayward rightfully earned the Academy Award for her portrayal of this woman. The story grips from the beginning and you cannot leave it until the very last. I highly recommend this motion picture to anyone.
