About this product

Product Information

Director Richard Linklater teams with writer Skip Hollandsworth for this darkly comic docudrama detailing the unusual friendship between a likable Texas mortician and a wealthy but reviled widow, and the shocking crime that followed. Inspired by Hollandsworth's 1998 Texas Monthly article that first caught the attention of Linklater, Bernie takes place in Carthage, TX, where effeminate mortician Bernie Tiede (Jack Black) enjoys a reputation as a friendly and upstanding member of the community. Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine), on the other hand, couldn't hold a lower position on the local social scale. Repressed and bitter, nasty Marjorie has isolated herself from her neighbors, and as a result has been essentially shunned in her small town. The moment Bernie shows Marjorie a shred of kindness, she clings to him tightly and refuses to let go. Meanwhile, as Marjorie becomes Bernie's sugar mama and the pair becomes inseparable, the local rumor mill begins to churn. Eventually, her intense jealousy becomes too much for Bernie to take. When the caustic widow's body is discovered stuffed in her own freezer, local District Attorney Buck Davidson (Matthew McConaughey) vows that justice will be served, but he finds it difficult to build a convincing case against Bernie as the locals rally to his defense.

    Laugh your butt off

This whole story is so preposterous that it has to be true--and it is! Jack Black and the rest of cast deliver a great performance, and the locals from Carthage, Texas, are great!

Bernie Not good Movie in my opinion!

As far as the movie Bernie goes The Blu-ray work perfectly from beginning to end. Happy with that part. But the movie I didn’t really like it not my kind of movie. Didn’t care for the story at all. Thought it was kind of boring. Not sure I’d watch it again.

  • Bernie (Blu-ray Disc, 2012)

"Bernie" is a true story, even featuring some of the townspeople of Carthage, Texas, who knew Bernie Tiede and his victim Marjorie Nugent. An assistant funeral director in Carthage, Bernie (Jack Black) is an infinitely kind, infinitely generous man who's the friend of everyone in town. But everyone in town is dumbfounded when Bernie manages to win the good opinion of Marjorie (Shirley MacLaine), a sour, bossy, but very wealthy harridan who doesn't have a good opinion of anyone except Marjorie. Bernie quits his undertaker's job and becomes personal assistant to Marjorie, who disinherits her unloved and unlovable children in favor of Bernie. One day Marjorie stops showing up in town. Bernie tells the townspeople that Marjorie is ill and in a nursing home. No one ...

  • The whole mortuary backdrop was a gas. A bit weird

You have to see this if you like any of the three stellar actors involved in this film. Black, MacLaine or McConaughey. All great performances. It's a weird bio pic with some, if not a lot of ironic dark humor. While the story is interesting, it felt a little more like a documentary of what happened in real life. The whole mortuary backdrop was a gas. I liked it once, but it's the sort of movie, at least for me, once is enough. See it! Cheers, Max Rainet A movie lover for life.

  • East Texas at it's best...AND Worst!!!

This is one of the GREAT TRUE STORIES of all time. Simply about one fine man who finally got all he could take. Being from deep east Texas, and a retired funeral director with over 45 years experience, I could really associate with Bernie. This is also a really excellent window into how true east Texans live...and die. The casting on this movie was superb, especially Jack Black. I have one friend in Lufkin, TX, who knew Bernie, and I had talked with him on the phone before. The movie is pretty close to how it really was. ENJOY!!!!!!
